Inspiration
We started with a medical product recommender, then switched to an instant portfolio builder for co-op and job seekers, then switched again. After hours of going back and forth, we realized the real problem wasn't which idea to build: it was that we couldn't decide. Everyone knows "where should we eat?" can take longer than the meal. So we built a tool for exactly that.
What it does
What✌️Do turns a decision into a fast game. Pick Food, Plans, Movies, Custom or Coin, get 5 options, and duel them two at a time. Every time you stall, a character (a waiter, Grandma, a cat…) walks closer. A final gut check tells you whether you really wanted the runner-up. With friends, share a 4-letter room code: everyone votes, majority wins, and ties go to a coin flip that every phone sees land the same way.
With $n$ options, the bracket always takes $n-1$ duels, so 5 options means just 4 quick picks.
How we built it
A single installable web page (HTML, CSS, JavaScript) on Cloudflare Pages. Live rooms use Cloudflare Durable Objects + WebSockets, one per room code, with the server doing all the randomness so every phone stays in sync. Movies come from the TMDB API for each player's country. Everything runs free: no accounts, no ads.
Challenges we ran into
Keeping it free: AI search and Google Maps needed paid plans, so we switched to built-in lists plus TMDB. We couldn't install Xcode, so we made an installable web app instead of a phone app. And making every phone see the same shuffle and coin flips meant moving all randomness to the server.
What we learned
Constraints make better products, real-time multiplayer is very doable with Durable Objects, and the hardest part of a hackathon can be deciding what to build.
