Inspiration
I've long been fascinated by the image of a space whale. Seeing the potential of Midjourney to generate this concept in countless variations, I was inspired to bring this beloved childhood image to life.
How I made it
Midjourney served as both my image and video generator. Between these processes, I used Topaz Labs Bloom to creatively upscale the images, aiming to create a truly breathtaking visual experience. For the voiceover, I used ElevenLabs to generate the monologue for the space whale.
Challenges I ran into
A key challenge was visually representing the passage of time the whale has spent alone in space. To achieve this, I created a sequence where the background changes every second. This required me to first isolate the whale by removing the original background and replacing it with a greenscreen. I then generated separate videos of beautiful space vistas and used chromakey in my editing software to replace the green screen with the transitioning space videos.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
I am particularly proud of the film's visual aspect. While many beautiful AI short films exist, I'm honored to have been the one to bring this specific concept to life. Many of the individual frames turned out to be stunningly beautiful.
What I learned
Having ChatGPT write the monologue was an interesting creative choice. For this specific project, it worked well, as most people would likely have a hard time imagining what a "space whale" would think. However, I believe AI has significant limitations for general scriptwriting. There is a depth to human emotion and lived experience that is expressed when a person writes from the heart, and I do not believe this can ever be fully replicated by an AI.
What's next for What ChatGPT Imagines a Space Whale Would Think
This competition marks the next step for this project. Should the film be nominated, I plan to take my AI filmmaking journey even more seriously, continuing to create beautiful, emotionally resonant films and music videos while hopefully improving with each release.
