What are Whalnee Pads?
Whalnee pads are the typical knee pads often found with skateboard culture with the added twist inspired by the protective layers and exoskeleton of a whale.
Our Goal
The goal of our project is to design and create innovative knee pads inspired by the biomimicry of humpback whales, leveraging their unique skeletal structure for support and their blubber's shock-absorbing properties for enhanced comfort and impact resistance. This project aims to deliver a practical, ergonomic, and sustainable solution for individuals requiring superior knee protection in various sports settings.
The Design Process
The whale’s skeleton is built for strength and flexibility, designed to endure immense pressure. For the middle layer of the knee pad, we created an inner support layer modeled after the rib and vertebra structure. Whale blubber acts as a natural shock absorber, protecting against extreme forces. This inspired the knee pad’s cushioning layer, designed to absorb impacts and ensure comfort.
