ScriptEd Hackathon: Dare Explore Disrupt!
Your Project Members
Bryan Oyuela, Reda Akrab, Samuel Estevez, Israel Natal, and Eddie Andujar.
What is the name of your project?
Whack-An-Alien.
What does this project do?
This is a game that utilizes HTML, CSS, and JQuery. It uses buttons to progress into the story and then into the game itself.
Who did you design this project for?
This project was designed for all users who are interested in casual PC games.
What was your inspiration for this project?
The inspiration for this project was Whack-A-Mole, and Galaga. We initially thought of creating a game that was similar to Galaga more than anything. In this idea, the player would be able to move around within a certain vicinity using the arrow keys. The player would also be able to shoot random targets that would appear on the screen. However, it was brought to our attention that we would most likely not have enough time to complete the game, so we decided to incorporate our knowledge of space and belief in aliens within the Whack-A-Mole concept. We decided that we would create a game that randomly spawns aliens out of holes and the player's goal would be to hit the alien and send it back into the hole.
What challenges did you run into?
Making the assets for the alien was very hard because we had to find a free program that would allow us to get his art done. The program didn't provide the necessary elements needed to create our little alien friend. We also had a catastrophic error in our coding that had us stumped for a while because we couldn't find where the error had occurred.
What accomplishments are you most proud of?
We are most proud of the fact that we were able to find a way to randomize the aliens appearance through the holes. This was very difficult to create.
What did your team learn?
We learned a lot of new things from making 3D text appear to things like random number generators. The amount of flexibility due to a lack of teammates taught all of us to be able to adapt to new environments. It also taught us to work dispite how bad the odds are stacked against us. We can all stand with pride and excitement and talk about this project we took on.
