Inspiration
This year, for the first time, we experienced a roach problem as we dormed on-campus. At first, we noticed baby roaches more and more frequently, so we called an exterminator, and voila, he found a nest behind one of our fridges. We created Whack-a-Roach for ourselves and others in similar situations to relieve stress, as we exterminate the roaches one-by-one with different weapons, and to learn more about the common types of roaches on-campus.
What it does
Whack-a-Roach has two features: 1. Identify a Roach and 2. Whack-a-Roach. Identify a Roach teaches you about three common types of roaches on-campus. Whack-a-Roach features a minigame inspired by Whack-a-Mole, in which you use various weapons to try to kill all the roaches before time's up. Sound effects are included!
How we built it
Two members of the group came up with the idea and presented, and three of us coded a simple HTML, CSS, and Javascript web page.
Challenges we ran into
For the various weapons we offer, the cursors are big and do not have a pointer, so although it may look like a certain image was clicked, it may actually be pointing in the space between the images.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Whack-a-Roach
What we learned
One of my team members learned a lot about roaches, so much that we could impress the exterminator with what we know now the next time he comes.
What's next for Whack-a-Roach
Adding more levels to the game and adding skills to the different weapons. Adding a flowsheet to narrow down the various types of roaches
