Inspiration

We redesigned the Westminster Shorter Catechism (WSC) app to make learning Christian doctrine more modern, interactive, and accessible. Preparing lessons and studying the catechism personally, I realized students and parents often struggle with static text. We wanted an app that makes studying engaging, bilingual, and supported by an AI Tutor to answer questions and provide guidance.

What it does

  • Provides all catechism questions and answers in English and Chinese.
  • Includes full scripture references for every answer.
  • Quiz mode to test understanding and reinforce memorization.
  • Text-to-speech support to listen to questions and answers.
  • AI Tutor Chat powered by Gemini 3 for interactive learning and personalized guidance.
  • Modern interface for smooth browsing and study across devices.

How we built it

  • React Native + TypeScript for cross-platform mobile apps.
  • TailwindCSS for a clean, modern, and intuitive UI.
  • Implemented Text-to-Speech for accessibility and auditory learning.
  • Designed interactive quiz module with randomized questions for practice.
  • Integrated Gemini 3 AI Tutor to answer theological questions in real-time and provide learning support.

Challenges we ran into

  • Balancing bilingual content while keeping the interface clean and readable.
  • Implementing AI Tutor interactions that are accurate, helpful, and encouraging.
  • Designing quizzes that are challenging but not discouraging for users of all levels.
  • Ensuring smooth Text-to-Speech playback across devices.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • Complete redesign of WSC QA app for modern, cross-platform use.
  • Interactive learning tools: quizzes, AI Tutor, and text-to-speech.
  • Bilingual support making the catechism accessible to both English and Chinese speakers.
  • Successfully created a guided, structured, and motivating learning experience for students, teachers, and parents alike.

What we learned

  • Modern interfaces and interactive tools greatly improve retention and engagement.
  • AI support can make theological study approachable and personalized.
  • Bilingual content needs careful design to remain clear and uncluttered.
  • Cross-platform development with React Native is efficient but requires attention to performance details.

What's next for Westminster Shorter Catechism

  • Expand AI Tutor capabilities to handle more complex theological questions.
  • Add spaced repetition and smart quiz suggestions for better memorization.
  • Introduce progress tracking and streaks to motivate daily learning.
  • Explore additional translations and accessibility features.
  • Continue refining user experience and interface de
