Inspiration

Day 1 at UIC : Freshmen are already finding it hard to navigate through their classes, hunting where each building is located. Its the Fall semester and it gets really warm around campus. A student is tired after attending classes for 3 hours straight, and is looking to grab a quick snack as his next class is in 10 minutes. He looks around to find a vending machine and water filter but is frustrated as it's his first day on campus and he doesn't know where they are located.

What it does

Wendor is your onestop solution to locate vending machines and water filters at UIC. It shows the locations for all the vending machines and water filters on campus.

How we built it

We used Google Maps' API to implement the map on our website. To design the website, we used HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. We also used custom markers to design the vending machine and water filter icons.

Challenges we ran into

This was our first experience where we had to come up with a project in 24 hours. We only knew the bits and bytes of HTML/CSS so everyone had to learn and implement our concept to our website. This was challenging for us at the beginning but we managed to execute and design it.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud of coming up with a unique concept which meets students' expectations and demands in terms of finding a nearby vending machine or a water filter between classes or late at night when most of the restaurants are closed. We are also happy to implement custom markers on Google Maps instead of the common red drop down pin. This gives a cleaner look to our website and also elevates the user experience.

What we learned

We learned how to use Git and Github. We also learned HTML, CSS, JavaScript and how to implement Google Maps API to our website. This project also helped us to gain a unique experience that even if we only have 24 hours, we can implement our ideas from paper to practical.

What's next for Wendor

Wendor is by the community and for the community. In the future we plan to implement custom user ratings and a vending score factor, which depends on the quality of snacks the vending machine provides and if a user is looking for a particular snack whether or not it is present in that vending machine. Users will also be able to rate and leave reviews on vending machines and if a vending machine eats money without providing the item, we can let the management know that the vending machine requires repairs and upgrades.
