Inspiration

WellPoint was inspired by the challenges people face when managing long-term health conditions and navigating the healthcare system. With hospital wait times often unpredictable and appointments hard to book, many individuals with chronic conditions like diabetes, hypertension, and heart disease struggle to stay on top of their health. We wanted to create a platform that gives users not only real-time hospital wait times but also a way to track their wellness in one place, making it easier to manage their conditions and prioritize their health.

What it does

WellPoint is an app designed to help individuals track their health and wellness, with a specific focus on long-term conditions. Key features include: Hospital Wait Time Tracker: Real-time data on wait times for emergency rooms and specialty clinics at hospitals in Oakville. Personalized Health Monitoring: Users can input daily health indicators (such as blood pressure and glucose levels) using sliders and checkboxes. Specialist Locator: A list of healthcare professionals in Oakville, with details on their specialties, availability, and location. Interactive Health Facts: Fun and educational health tips delivered daily to keep users informed and engaged.

How we built it

We used Thunkable, a no-code platform, to quickly design and prototype the app. The platform’s drag-and-drop features allowed us to create a user-friendly interface without needing to write code. Key components included: User Authentication: Using Firebase to manage sign-ups and logins. Health Data Collection: Implemented sliders for health indicators and text input for symptoms. Wait Time Integration: Simulated real-time hospital wait times (with plans to integrate real APIs in the future). Specialist Listings: Custom lists with hospital information and healthcare providers.

Challenges we ran into

Data Accuracy: Getting real-time, reliable data on hospital wait times was a challenge, as APIs for local hospitals were not easily accessible. We worked with simulated data to demonstrate functionality, but this remains an area for future development. User Input Handling: Ensuring that user inputs for health data (e.g., blood pressure, glucose levels) were accurate and consistent was tricky, especially when testing various data formats. Design Limitations: Thunkable's design features were somewhat limited in customization, which made it difficult to achieve a highly polished user interface. We had to work within these constraints while still providing an intuitive experience.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Working Prototype: We successfully built a functional prototype of the app, including health tracking, wait time simulation, and specialist search features. User-Focused Design: Despite design limitations, we created an easy-to-navigate app that is intuitive for users of all ages, especially those managing chronic health conditions. Innovative Health Integration: We combined real-time healthcare data (wait times) with personalized wellness tracking, creating a unique solution that meets users' specific health needs.

What we learned

No-Code Development: We learned how to use Thunkable and Firebase to quickly prototype and develop an app without writing traditional code. This approach allowed us to focus on user experience and functionality. The Importance of UX: Designing an app for healthcare means understanding user needs and ensuring the interface is simple, clear, and accessible. Testing the app with real users provided valuable insights into how to improve its design. Data Integration Challenges: We learned that accessing real-time healthcare data can be difficult, and often requires collaboration with hospitals or health organizations. In the future, we plan to work with real-time APIs.

What's next for WellPoint

API Integration for Real-Time Data: We plan to integrate APIs for real hospital wait times and health status tracking, ensuring the app provides real, actionable data. Expanded Health Metrics: We aim to include more health metrics for users to track, such as weight, exercise, and medication adherence. Community Features: In the future, WellPoint will include a community feature where users can connect with others facing similar health challenges and share advice, experiences, and support. Broader Reach: WellPoint will be expanded to other regions, offering users nationwide access to healthcare resources and real-time data.
