Inspiration
We’ve all experienced the google rabbit hole offinng a skin change, searching symptoms online, and spiraling into clinical anxiety. This "Information Asymmetry" fuels a $20 billion crisis of unnecessary ER visits because patients lack the tools to articulate their concerns. We inspired Wello to clear this "Navigation Fog" and move healthcare from reactive dread to proactive data.
What it does
Wello is an AI-driven triage platform that acts as an automated "Pre-Primary Care" pipeline. Users can analyze skin concerns against 20 different conditions, engage with an intelligent chatbot to document symptoms, and instantly generate a "Clinician Brief." The app then maps the user to the nearest specialist, turning a moment of panic into a structured path toward professional care.
How we built it
The core engine is a ResNet34 deep learning model fine-tuned on the Fitzpatrick17k dataset to ensure the AI recognizes conditions across a diverse range of skin tones. The backend is powered by Flask, processing images and returning high-recall predictions with a custom confidence threshold of 0.15. The frontend provides a seamless transition from AI analysis to a specialized locator, ensuring the user journey never ends at a "black box" label.
Challenges we ran into
Our biggest hurdle was finding a dataset with diversity. many of the easier and more bigger datasets only had whiter skin tones. Meaning that none of us are able to use the app. But we spent hours search for the AI
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We successfully integrated a "Clinician Brief" feature that translates rambling symptoms into medical-grade summaries, effectively solving the communication gap between patients and doctors.
What we learned
We learned that navigation in healthcare is about preparation. We discovered that providing users with structured data significantly reduces "Clinical Anxiety," and that inclusive datasets are a technical requirement, not just an ethical one, for building reliable medical AI.
What's next for Wello
The next step for Wello is integrating Secure Data Handoffs, allowing the "Clinician Brief" to be sent directly into Electronic Health Record (EHR) systems. We also aim to expand our model to include pediatric-specific conditions, truly making Wello the universal "digital front door" for every family’s healthcare journey.
