Inspiration

We have been through situations where our mental health was impacted by stress, anxiety, or mood swings. College life, while exciting, can be overwhelming with tight deadlines, back-to-back exams, and the constant pressure to maintain high academic performance. Balancing coursework, extracurricular activities, and social expectations often leaves little room to prioritize mental well-being. As students, we saw firsthand how challenging it can be to prioritize mental well-being with academic and social pressures. This inspired us to create an interactive solution that encourages students to improve their mental health and well-being in a fun and engaging way.

What it does

Our app, Wellness Warrior, motivates users to track their emotions, complete mood-enhancing activities, and earn rewards. Users can engage in activities such as exercising, meditating, or journaling to earn points, which can be used to customize their virtual pets. By analyzing mental health data, the app also provides insights that could potentially aid clinicians in identifying patterns in mental health. Our design includes a user-friendly interface that tracks emotions, logs daily journals, and features a point-based system to reward users for positive activities. The app also showcases an adorable Golden Doodle named Walter, who provides emotional support and helps create a calming, encouraging environment.

How we built it

We developed the app for iOS using Swift, Xcode, UIKit, and Figma. Inspired by Duolingo, we implemented a pet decoration system to motivate users to engage with the app regularly. Drawing from their past experiences as developers at hackathons, Nadine and Beren worked on the demo and user interface. With a minor in business management, Katya helped craft the presentation and develop a business model for the project. Vallerie, our designer, created the logo, overall styling guide, and our first pet, Walter.

Challenges we ran into

One challenge was ensuring that the app would keep users engaged while offering meaningful mental health support. We had to strike a balance between entertainment and real emotional benefits. Additionally, designing a system that appropriately tracks and analyzes users’ emotions presented technical difficulties, particularly in integrating different mental health data patterns.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We’re proud of creating an app that is not only functional but also enjoyable to use. The point system and virtual pets encourage ongoing participation, and we successfully implemented a clean and calming UI. We're also proud of the potential our app has to positively impact mental health and help students regulate their emotions.

What we learned

Throughout this project, we learned a great deal about mental health and the importance of emotional well-being in academic success. On the technical side, we deepened our knowledge of app development, particularly using Swift and UIKit. Collaborating with people from diverse backgrounds and academic disciplines also helped us improve our project management and teamwork skills.

What's next for Wellness Warrior

Next, we plan to expand the app by introducing new types of pets, accessories, and additional questions or missions to further engage users. We aim to share the collected data with clinics and organizations to contribute to broader mental health efforts. Our ultimate goal is to improve users' mental health and academic performance by providing long-term emotional support and insights.
