Inspiration
Our inspiration came from the Hank Green focus friend app, the Finch app, and the concept of donating to replenishing forests by focusing or using certain habit tracking plugins.
What it does
As a group, set tasks to complete in the real world through a virtual garden shared between friends. Buy and plant seeds from a shopkeeper, plant the seed in the garden, and then name what task you would like to complete. The seed will only sprout if you complete that task in real life.
How we built it
Blender, Unity, NetSync, Substance Painter
Challenges we ran into
We had trouble setting Styly up - being able to run a working prototype took until the third day, where we then struggled to build off of our program to work in every feature we would have liked.
Merging everybody's work into one Unity file was a challenge, as we didn't work the most effectively with version control, and as a result, some work that was done separately was lost in the final product.
One feature we would have liked is for users to be able to interact and grab objects in a scene, but Styly's XR rig didn't contain native grabbing features.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We were able to integrate Styly into our work, and as tough as it was, seeing the location-based multiplayer in real-time in our scenes felt like a huge accomplishment on its own. We also were able to implement grabbing through the Styly XR rig.
What we learned
Because of this amazing opportunity, we, as a team, were able to learn about project management, the foundations of building a good idea, and a new untested technology in the multiplayer space. This was an exciting opportunity to work on a project with different companies at Reality Hack and learn something new.
What's next for Garden Society
Revamps! This cut short hack was a great place to think big. But we decide we want to revamp this project to make it as accessible as possible
