Inspiration

As a team, we wanted to design a project that supports mental health under SDG 3, specifically target 3.4: Reduce mortality from non-communicable diseases and promote mental health awareness. We specifically decided to tackle how stigma often prevents individuals in need of help from getting the support they need.

What it does

Well Reminder has a website and Chrome extension. Both provide local help lines (based on country from ip address) with a short description. The website also contains encouraging text and general resources for mental health. The chrome extension occasionally opens the Well Reminder website when opening a new tab, and provides a link to the website.

How we built it

The website is hosted by Firebase, with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. The chrome extension uses the Chrome Extension API, also using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. We use a custom database in a JSON file to retrieve help lines for each country.

Challenges we faced

Both creating the website and the Chrome extension involved using unfamiliar tools and API's. None of us on the team had experience with developing websites or extensions, or with the Google services we used with this project. Initially, or scope was too large as we planned to include an AI chatbot using available models, but we found that we did not have the time and instead focused on completing the main aspects of the website and extension.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Despite several challenges regarding learning new languages and using unfamiliar frameworks, we managed to create a working project while gaining experience working as a team and with unfamiliar tools. Using a google document and a Trello workspace, we organized our work to make it more manageable and work more efficiently.

The future of Well Reminder

In the future, possible updates to Well Reminder include a feature to scan and detect searches indicating mental health distress and then open the Well Reminder website in a new tab. More immediately, we will expand our database of supported countries.
