Inspiration

Our team was primarily inspired by Tamagotchi style handheld devices, but we decided to expand upon them to help people focus on health and wellbeing.

What it does

Using the simple 3 button system, you can navigate menus that describe the health of your dragon pet, directly impacted by how much exercise you have done, healthy foods you have eaten, and water you drank. Exercise and nutrition can be inputted within the menus, and the effects can be seen on the heat map and pet stats.

How we built it

The brain of our device is the raspberry pi, running the screen, taking inputs from the buttons, and monitoring the camera. Behind the scenes we used the GPIzero library for input and output with the buttons. All of the electrical components were wired up on a breadboard to the GPIO pins on the raspberry pi.

Challenges we ran into

One of the largest difficulties we ran into was connecting to the raspberry pi, between problems with power and internet connection, it was making development slow, however we were able to change ports and cables, and those issues became reasonable. We considered integrating a camera tracking that tracks if a user is doing exercise, however time constraints didn't let that happen.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

The UI is our biggest point of pride, as it captures the classic feel we were going for, with a unique to us touch. Our artist on our team worked hard to customize the assets to give it the exact look we wanted, and it came together cohesively.

What we learned

This hackathon taught us a lot! We gained a lot of experience with programming the graphics for OLED screen with the raspberry pi, and although we were unable to implement the camera tracking, we still learned a lot in the process.

What's next for Welk

In the future, the size of the computer will go down, and the size of the screen will go up. Unfortunately these were both restrictions with the hardware we had with us, but the form factor could be dramatically improved to end with a pocket sized health pal.
