Inspiration

Students, have you ever shown up to formal office hours only to find a crowd of students vying for the tutor's attention? Have you ever had a pressing question that just can't be answered through online forums? We know we have.

So, isn't there a better way to share learning among our community of students?

What it does

WeLearn is a mobile app designed to connect students to other students to form a community of learning and teaching exchange.

Users can login to their accounts and start study sessions as a student to see an interactive wayfinding map of available tutors in their area.

And what better way to learn than to teach? (Ever heard of the Protégé Effect?) Users can also start their own study sessions to help their peers learn new concepts while they reinforce their own understanding.

Fun features include tracking your total study hours, rating your favourite tutors, and tracking your progression in subjects.

How we built it

WeLearn was built in Android Studio using Java. Future development looks forward to integrating MappedIn API for indoor wayfinding and markers, fleshing out a user database, and injecting data visualization for study statistics.

Challenges we ran into

As beginner hackers, learning a new tech stack is always a (fun) challenge. This was one of the most complex design projects that our team had taken on, and while we are thrilled with the end result, we would have loved more time to dive into more advanced development like API calls and databases.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are very proud of the graphics in our project - all graphics are vectors that were designed and created during the hacking period, and we felt they brought a lot of life and identity to our project.

And, of course, we are so proud to have a working demo at the end of 24 hours of working with a brand-new-to-us technology.

What we learned

We learned a lot about the workflow involved in developing mobile apps, including just how intensive it is to develop a pleasing UI.

What's next for WeLearn

Development will continue after the cmd-f 2024. We look forward to continuing to delve into new skills like API calls and databases.
