Inspiration

In Nigeria, thousands of welders work under the hot sun in dusty workshops, building gates, railings, and steel frameworks that hold our communities together. Yet while the world races into the age of AI, these skilled craftsmen are left behind, disconnected from the tech revolution.

We looked around and saw local welders struggling with real problems—answering technical questions on the spot, measuring materials with worn-out tape measures, finding customers, and making costly mistakes that could be prevented with proper guidance. The question hit us: Why should welders be excluded from the AI race?

WeldersKit exists to bridge the gap between cutting-edge technology and traditional local lifestyles. We believe welders deserve access to fast, blazing AI technology right from their devices. Our mission is simple: put artificial intelligence in the pockets of every welder in Nigeria, making expert knowledge accessible with just a few taps.

What It Does

WeldersKit is a comprehensive AI-powered assistant designed specifically for the Nigerian welding community. Here's what we built:

AI Consultation Tool - Both welders and customers can ask our intelligent chatbot anything. Need to know the right amperage for 6mm steel? Wonder which welding method works best for a gate project? Just ask and get instant, accurate answers. No waiting, no guessing.

Digital Ruler Tool - Measure pipes or metal discs directly with your smartphone camera. Forgot your tape measure at a client's site? No problem. Our computer vision technology provides accurate measurements without any external equipment.

Defect Detector Tool - Upload a photo of a weld and our AI analyzes it for defects the human eye might miss—porosity, cracks, incomplete penetration, and undercut. We trained this model on a large dataset of welding faults to help welders deliver better quality work and give customers confidence in their projects.

Welders Around Me - Using Google Maps integration, customers can instantly find skilled welders near their location. No more asking neighbors or driving around searching. Welders can also locate nearby building materials shops with one tap, saving time when they need steel rods, electrodes, or safety equipment.

Welders Marketplace - Customers can browse through 100% verified welders on our platform. Each welder has been checked for skills, reliability, and professionalism. View profiles, see previous work, read reviews, and hire with confidence.

Blog Section - Our knowledge hub keeps everyone informed about industry news, new techniques, safety protocols, and platform security tips. Education empowers our community to make better decisions and stay safe.

How We Built It

We used a modern tech stack optimized for speed and reliability:

  • Frontend: HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and modern frameworks for the main platform. We used Streamlit specifically for wrapping the AI consultation tool's frontend interface.
  • Backend: Python with FastAPI for fast, reliable API endpoints
  • AI Engine: Google Gemini 2.0 Flash for smart, context-aware responses
  • Hosting: Backend on Render, Frontend components on Streamlit Cloud (separated for scalability)

We started by interviewing actual welders to understand their real problems, built an MVP with core features, then gradually added the calculator, defect detector, and mapping tools. Everything was optimized for mobile devices and low-bandwidth scenarios because that's the reality for our users.

Challenges We Ran Into

Funding was our biggest challenge. We couldn't afford premium hosting services or paid API keys. Throughout this project, we had to source for free API keys and free hosting platforms. Every feature had to work within tight budget constraints. This taught us resourcefulness and actually made our product more sustainable.

Data acquisition was surprisingly hard. Nigeria has no comprehensive databases of welding techniques or defect images. To train our AI models, we had to web-scrape data from multiple external sources, visit local workshops to photograph welding faults, and manually curate everything. It was time-consuming but gave us insights no purchased dataset could provide—we learned what Nigerian welders actually face daily.

Technical deployment issues tested us. We hit an inotify watch limit error on Streamlit Cloud that showed up as a 403 Forbidden error. After hours of debugging, we discovered it was a file watcher problem in production. We also struggled with CORS configuration when connecting our FastAPI backend to the Streamlit frontend across different domains.

Understanding user needs took iteration. Our first version was too technical. Welders don't need lengthy explanations—they need quick, actionable answers. We completely redesigned our interface to be simple and accessible for people who are welding experts but not tech experts.

Accomplishments We're Proud Of

We built a working AI consultant that actually understands welding terminology and provides accurate, real-time answers. We solved real problems for an underserved community that tech usually overlooks. We deployed fast—from idea to working product in days through smart tool choices and focused execution.

We designed everything Nigerian-first: Naira pricing based on local market rates, understanding of Nigerian welding practices, mobile-first interface, and features built specifically for our local context. Our clean architecture separates frontend and backend for easy scaling and maintenance.

Most importantly, we created a user-friendly design with no complicated menus, no confusing settings, no tech jargon—just simple, direct help when and where it's needed.

What We Learned

Despite having frontend expertise as a team, this project pushed us deep into backend development and AI/ML. Working with Python and FastAPI taught us about API design, middleware configuration, and server-side logic. Training the defect detection model introduced us to machine learning workflows—data collection, preprocessing, model training, and deployment.

This experience made our team hungry for AI/ML. Seeing an AI model we trained actually work in the real world, helping real people solve real problems, was transformative. We're committed to learning more and building more AI-powered products.

We also learned that understanding users deeply matters more than fancy features, simple solutions work better for non-technical users, local context is crucial, and AI can democratize expertise regardless of education or economic status.

What's Next for WeldersKit

If granted appropriate funding, we can transform our ideas into a full-fledged startup and solve something truly big for Africa. With investment, we could expand beyond Nigeria to serve welders across Ghana, Kenya, South Africa, and the entire continent. We could partner with vocational training centers and create AI-powered apprenticeship programs that make learning welding techniques more accessible.

The funding would let us leverage state-of-the-art AI while maintaining collaboration between AI and human jobs. We're not replacing welders—we're empowering them to work safer, more efficiently, and more profitably. Technology should elevate human potential, not eliminate human work.

This is a huge milestone as we set a new record by drawing AI closer to local work in Nigeria. For too long, AI has been seen as a tool for white-collar professionals in offices. We're proving AI belongs everywhere—in dusty workshops, on construction sites, and in the hands of every skilled craftsman who builds our nation.

Our long-term vision extends beyond welding to become Africa's leading platform for all skilled trades—carpenters, electricians, plumbers, masons, mechanics. We're building a movement to digitize and professionalize Africa's artisan economy, one craftsman at a time.

WeldersKit represents inclusion. Everyone deserves to benefit from the AI revolution—the welder under the hot sun, the apprentice learning the trade, the customer seeking reliable service. As Nigeria and Africa race into the future, we're ensuring that no one, especially not the skilled hands that literally build our nations, gets left behind.

Thank you for considering WeldersKit. Together, we can prove the AI revolution belongs to everyone, not just the privileged few.
