Problem Statement:

Welders often face challenges when welding in hard-to-reach locations or in awkward positions, leading to inaccurate welds and potential safety hazards. The objective of this design challenge is to create a device or tool that can aid welders in completing welds accurately and efficiently in such challenging locations, while also minimizing costs.

Background Information:

Welding is a crucial aspect of many manufacturing processes and construction projects. Welders face challenges in welding in challenging locations such as tight spaces, overhead positions, or at heights, leading to inaccurate welds, injuries, and project delays. Additionally, using traditional welding methods in such locations can be inefficient, resulting in increased costs.

Target Audience and Their Needs:

The target audience for this design solution is welders who work in unique and challenging scenarios. Welders require a tool that provides support to hold their arm in place while welding in awkward positions, reducing the chances of an inaccurate weld and improving the overall quality of the weld. Additionally, they require a tool that is easy to use, safe, durable, and cost-effective.

Detailed Design Description:

The proposed design solution is an adjustable wrist rest attached to a tall pole on an H-shaped stand. The device is designed to provide support to the welder's arm and hold it in place while welding in challenging positions. The wrist rest is made of a sturdy material that can withstand high temperatures and is ergonomically designed to provide comfort and reduce fatigue during extended welding sessions. The height and angle of the wrist rest can be adjusted to suit the position of the welder, providing maximum flexibility and ease of use. The device can be easily transported and set up at different locations, reducing the need for additional equipment and improving efficiency. The device also has a detachable extension that allows the user to weld up to 12 inches away with support.

User story/walkthrough:

When a welder encounters a challenging welding scenario, they can set up the adjustable wrist rest attached to a tall pole on a stand. They can adjust the height and angle of the wrist rest to fit their needs and comfortably place their arm on the support while welding. The device provides stability and support to the welder's arm, reducing the chances of an inaccurate weld and improving the quality of the weld. The welder can use the device for extended periods without experiencing fatigue or discomfort.

Real-world feasibility: The proposed design solution is feasible for Chart to manufacture, as it utilizes commonly available materials and can be easily assembled. The device is also cost-effective and can reduce the need for additional equipment, improving efficiency and reducing costs. The wrist rest is made of a sturdy material that can withstand high temperatures and is ergonomically designed for comfort and ease of use. The device is also safe to use, as it provides stability and support to the welder's arm, reducing the chances of an inaccurate weld and potential injuries.

Next steps/areas of improvement: The proposed design solution can be improved by incorporating additional features such as a built-in clamp to hold the welding gun, a tool tray to hold additional equipment or a detachable arm support for ease of transportation. The device can also be optimized for specific welding scenarios, such as overhead welding, by incorporating specialized arm support. Additionally, digital control features may be incorporated to not only gain specific data for users’ experience but also improve welding quality even more. Lastly, user feedback can be collected to improve the design's overall usability and address any potential concerns or issues.
