Inspiration

The idea behind Welcome Family was to create a simple and friendly online community where anyone can join, share messages, interact with others, and feel connected regardless of their location. I wanted to build a platform that demonstrates how web technologies can be used to create meaningful communication instead of just displaying information.

What it does

Welcome Family is a cloud-based community website that allows users to:

  • Register securely with a unique account.
  • Log in using their credentials.
  • Recover forgotten passwords using a recovery code.
  • Share messages with the community.
  • Like posts while preventing duplicate likes.
  • View community posts in real time.
  • Store all user and message data securely in Google Sheets.
  • Access the website from anywhere through Firebase Hosting.

How I built it

The frontend was developed using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript to create a responsive and user-friendly interface.

For the backend, I used Google Apps Script, which processes user requests such as registration, login, password recovery, posting messages, and likes.

Instead of using a traditional database, I used Google Sheets as a cloud database, making the project lightweight, free, and easy to maintain.

The website is hosted on Firebase Hosting, providing a secure HTTPS connection and allowing the project to be accessed globally.

I also configured robots.txt, sitemap.xml, and Google Search Console so the website could be indexed by Google Search.

Challenges I ran into

Some of the biggest challenges included:

  • Connecting the website to Google Apps Script.
  • Managing asynchronous communication between the frontend and backend.
  • Preventing users from liking the same post multiple times.
  • Implementing secure login and password recovery.
  • Publishing the website online and configuring Google indexing correctly.

Each challenge helped me understand how real web applications communicate with cloud services.

Accomplishments that I'm proud of

  • Successfully deployed the website online using Firebase Hosting.
  • Implemented a complete registration and login system.
  • Connected the application with Google Sheets as a cloud database.
  • Added community interaction features such as posting and liking messages.
  • Configured the website for Google Search indexing.
  • Learned how frontend, backend, hosting, and cloud databases work together in a complete web application.

What I learned

This project helped me understand the complete workflow of modern web development. I learned how frontend applications communicate with backend services, how cloud databases can be integrated without traditional servers, how websites are deployed using Firebase Hosting, and how search engines discover websites through robots.txt, sitemap.xml, and Google Search Console.
