Inspiration

Although there are many Canadians that are buying securities, many of them do not believe they have a thorough understanding of investing. One of our group members took a course in finance and recalled that the professors taught various concepts using bushels of wheat. When we were children, we remembered playing agricultural games. We decided to combine the concepts of selling wheat into a simple agricultural game in order to teach the basics of finance and how to maintain a good financial position.

What it does

WeFarm is an interactive farming game that teaches financial concepts, such as trading and fluctuations in the stock market, to youth. The user is a wheat farmer whom must make the proper financial decisions to pay back their loan that they acquired from starting their farming business. The user can sell their wheat, make trades at the marketplace, request loans and upgrade their farm. However, the price at which the user sells their wheat is dependent on the supply and demand of the market. This forces the user to think critically to maintain their best financial position. Throughout the game, the user is introduced to various financial concepts, which the user can educate themselves on through the "resources" button. The financial concepts are delivered through various formats to aid youth who prefer either visual, auditory and/or kinaesthetic learning styles. Users can also gain money when they ace knowledge quizzes. Moreover, the user can visit their friends' farms, send gifts and help their friends through the game!

How we built it

We built our app preview on Figma using CSS. Our graphics were taken from the open source "unDraw". We also coded a simple version of a portion of the game using python. We worked on developing a user friendly app that would be intuitive, informative, and enjoyable.

Challenges we ran into

As students with backgrounds in business, math and medical science, coding was a skill that we were not familiar with. We had issues getting started with writing the basic lines of code. We faced difficulty in planning all the components required to create a game, such as the various outcomes that can occur depending on the input of the user

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud of creating a Figma app that is user friendly, has an intuitive design and teaches youth about financial concepts in a fun game! We are also proud of learning and practising how to code in python to create a simple version of a portion of WeFarm.

What we learned

We learned how to code the basics of python and how to design a game that is user-friendly.

What's next for WeFarm

We would like to learn how to code more complex features of the game, such as more detailed graphics. We would also like to transform
