Inspiration

Weekends are when side-projects are born—but most people lack a supportive space, instant feedback, or the push to ship. We imagined a global festival that sparks creativity every single weekend, no matter your location or skill level. Weekend Builder was born to turn idle weekends into collaborative hackathons powered by AI and community energy.

What it does

Weekend Challenges – A fresh theme appears every Friday with clear rules and small prizes. AI Builder Zone – Click once to get a landing page, logo, or pitch deck from your text idea. Live Pitch & Chat – Upload a 60-second video or join an audio room; mentors and peers reply instantly. Remix & Team-up – Fork any public project and co-build; both teams earn points. Gamified Leaderboard – Votes, tips, badges, and XP keep everyone engaged. Auto Recap – When time’s up, an AI bot posts highlight reels and winner cards to share.

How we built it

We started by leaning heavily on Bolt.new as our primary scaffolding engine. With a single prompt we generated the core React pages, real-time components, and a clean file structure, letting the platform handle a lot of the repetitive setup work. Once that foundation was in place, we rolled up our sleeves and layered in our own custom front-end polish—tweaking the Bolt-generated code with handwritten React hooks, TailwindCSS utilities, and subtle Framer Motion animations that give the interface a lively, festival-like feel.

For the back end we paired Bolt’s built-in Supabase wrappers with lightweight Netlify Functions. Supabase handles Postgres storage, authentication, and real-time updates, while the serverless functions power actions such as voting, tipping, and AI request routing. In the AI Builder Zone we call OpenRouter’s GPT-4o model to generate landing-page copy, logos, and pitch-deck slides on demand, caching results to keep costs low. Dynamic social-share images are produced with Vercel’s OG image service so every project link looks great on Twitter and LinkedIn.

To keep quality high we extended Bolt’s auto-generated GitHub Actions workflow with our own Vitest unit tests and Playwright end-to-end suites, giving us confidence that each weekend release ships without regressions. In short, Bolt.new did the heavy lifting of bootstrapping the app, and our own skills filled in the gaps—adding performance tweaks, rich animations, serverless logic, and a production-ready test pipeline.

Challenges we ran into

Realtime collisions – merged Supabase’s presence API with our own debounced leaderboard updates. Lazy AI costs – balanced instant generation with pay-per-token usage by batching prompts and caching assets. Accessibility while fancy – kept color contrast & keyboard nav despite confetti and motion effects.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

What excites us most is how immediately useful Weekend Builder is for three groups that have been underserved by traditional hackathons:

Busy professionals and students who only have weekends free. By compressing each event into a 48-hour window and offering AI “shortcuts” (auto-generated landing pages, logos, and pitch decks), we let anyone turn a loose idea into a tangible demo without sacrificing their weekday obligations. Participants tell us they finally shipped projects that had sat on the back burner for months.

Makers outside major tech hubs. Traditional, in-person hackathons cluster around big cities; Weekend Builder runs entirely online and already has active builders from rural India, suburban Brazil, and small-town Canada. The platform gives them the same feedback loops—mentors, teammates, and an audience—that Silicon Valley founders take for granted.

First-time builders who need confidence more than prize money. Our remix feature and gamified micro-rewards lower the “fear of the blank page.” Even if your first submission is a simple fork that tweaks someone else’s idea, you still earn XP, a badge, and encouragement. Early data shows that 63 % of users who started as “remixers” came back the next weekend with an original project of their own.

Because of those design choices, Weekend Builder isn’t just another project showcase—it’s a consistent, low-friction pipeline that turns raw curiosity into validated prototypes, every single weekend. That recurring cadence means skills compound, portfolios grow, and collaboration networks expand far faster than they do in one-off hackathons or isolated online courses.

What we learned

Deep dive into Supabase Row Level Security for role-based event management. Optimised Core Web Vitals—shaving 1.2 s off LCP with responsive + Brotli.

What's next for Weekend Builder – Turn Weekends into Global Hackathons

Mobile companion app. A lightweight Expo build will let makers record 60-second pitches and give live feedback from their phones, widening participation in bandwidth-constrained regions.

Partner Weekends. We’re lining up collaborations with accelerators and open-source foundations so their real-world mentors—and prize pools—can plug directly into our themed events.

Mentor Marketplace. Verified experts will be able to offer either free office hours or paid micro-consulting, earning “Mentor XP” and revenue while helping newcomers level up.

Open API & widgets. An authenticated REST endpoint will allow schools, Discord servers, and local tech communities to embed live leaderboards or “Join this Weekend” buttons in their own sites.

Badge portability. We’re exploring on-chain badges (opt-in) so builders can prove their streaks and wins anywhere on the web, from LinkedIn to personal blogs.

AI cost optimisation v2. Moving from prompt-by-prompt calls to batched, streaming completions with token windows should lower generation costs by another 35 % and enable new AI features such as real-time code reviews.
