Inspiration
Planning my own wedding, I saw how fragmented the process was—spreadsheets for budgets, random apps for guests, endless vendor searches. I wanted a single platform that combined AI smarts with practical tools to cut through the overwhelm, making it easy for busy couples to stay organized without sacrificing joy.
What it does
WeddingPlanner AI is an end-to-end platform for every wedding step: budget tracking with AI alerts, vendor marketplace with booking tools, guest list/RSVP management, wedding day timelines, and honeymoon planning—all with a 24/7 AI assistant for personalized guidance.
How we built it
We started with user research, interviewing 50+ engaged couples to map pain points. Built the frontend with React for responsive design, backend with Node.js/Express, and integrated Stripe for payments, Twilio for reminders, and travel APIs for honeymoon planning. PostgreSQL stores user data, while Chart.js visualizes budget metrics.
Challenges we ran into
Syncing real-time budget data across devices required solving latency issues; ensuring vendor availability calendars were accurate and up-to-date was tricky; and balancing AI personalization with user control—we iterated 8 times to get the preference quiz right for relevant recommendations.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
The AI overspending alerts have helped beta users cut costs by 15% on average; 90% of testers completed onboarding in under 5 minutes (meeting our acceptance criteria); and the offline timeline mode works flawlessly for wedding-day use in low-service areas.
What we learned
User-centric design is non-negotiable—small tweaks (like drag-and-drop seating charts) made huge impacts on usability. Integrating multiple APIs requires robust error handling, and AI needs to augment (not replace) human decision-making for emotional events like weddings.
What's next for this project
We’ll add collaborative planning for family/bridesmaids, calendar app integrations, and multi-language support. We’re also testing AR venue tours and a music playlist builder to expand the platform’s scope beyond planning to the wedding day itself.
