Background

Given the broad prompt “design a mobile experience for travelers”, we chose to focus our attention on addressing the specific needs of travelling bachelorx and bridal parties. We wanted to challenge ourselves to empathize with, learn from, and design a solution for a more niche demographic.

From our user research, we discovered the following pain points among group travelers:

  • Decision fatigue
  • Too many or too few opinions (due to indecisiveness, hesitance in sharing honest opinions in front of others, etc.)
  • Lack of communication
  • Unclear expectations
  • Timing & budgetary constraints

Purpose

“How might we help a bridal party feel less decision fatigue when planning a destination bach party?”

Wedding Party Party! aims to reduce decision fatigue that bachelorx and their bridal parties often feel when planning for a destination bach party. This mobile experience offers the following solutions for users:

  • Provide travel recommendations
  • Narrow down choices through group polling
  • Promote accountability & oversight within a group
  • Simplify the delegation process for the destination bach party's host by providing fixed decisions upfront (including location & date range)

Tools

  • Figma for wireframing & prototyping
  • Maze for conducting usability testing with 10+ target users
  • Photoshop for sketching & image editing
  • Zoom for hosting design meetings & conducting 1 live-virtual user interview

Challenges

  • Time spent on overall project: We could not work together on our project for the full time allotted to us due to prior engagements.
  • Time spent on ideating: We needed to quickly transition from wireframing to prototyping in order to test for usability so that we may identify gaps in our design and iterate accordingly.
  • Participant availability for user research & usability tests: Due to time constraints, we could only recruit a limited pool of participants.
  • Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) Level AA conformance: We were determined to find a color scheme that was both accessible & representative of our brand identity.
  • First-time collaboration: Before UX Scene Designathon, we have never worked with another on a project in the context of UX design!

Accomplishments

  • We rescoped the main user flow and concept for the project on Day 2 (10/15/2022) after analyzing and synthesizing insights from our usability test on Day 1 (10/14/2022).
  • We completed an incredible amount of user research and usability testing, involving 10+ participants within a span of 12 hours.
  • We very naturally and very quickly formed symbiotic relationship that allowed us to conceptualize and build out a concept together under 72 hours.

Takeaways

  • Teamwork is crucial!
  • Breaks are crucial! Let's extend empathy towards not only our users but also our teammates working on building solutions alongside us.
  • Successful project execution requires continual communication (frequent sync-up, shared/centralized documentation, clear design system, etc.).
  • Collaboration leads to divergent thinking, iterations, and (ultimately) better solutions!
  • Prioritize iterations according to time constraints and required deliverables.
  • When building solutions for problems under strict time constraints, prioritize usability over visual design.
  • Delegate tasks based off team members’ strengths.
  • Create a reasonable timeline before immediately taking action.
  • Consider adjusting or changing a project’s scope if it better solves for a user’s primary pain points.
  • At times, revising copy language can be a simple solution for a complex problem: it can require low effort while creating high impact.

Closing Comments

Time to Party Party & Sleep Sleep! (Then, we iterate some more.)

We challenged ourselves and learned so much from designing the Wedding Party Party! mobile experience over the course of (1) weekend. Teamwork makes the dream work! :)
