Inspiration

Being not well read about recycling ourselves, our team surveyed and understood this to be a common problem among many Singaporeans as well. As such, we ideated WeCycle to be an app that educates and encourages our users to be more proactive in recycling. Additionally, our group also researched and pinpointed that there is a demand for recyclables especially cardboard and styrofoams but buyers do not have the avenues to acquire them. As such, we were inspired to implement the marketplace feature of our application that recreates a upcycle trend for recyclables so that they can be used for different purposes.

What it does

Our app has 3 main core features:

Map: Our map feature helps users to locate any nearby recycling bins based on a public dataset given by NEA. This way, wherever our users are, they can use our app to find the nearest recycling bins/centres. To further thank them for their efforts, users can upload a proof of their recycles which can be verified to earn points.

Article: As a majority of Singaporeans are not knowledgable about recycling as well as its best practices, WeCycle aims to provide this information in a consolidated form. To further spur on the spirit of proactive learning, quizzes can be attempted by readers to gain points and also reinforce their learnings.

Marketplace: Some recyclables are in demand by others. WeCycle provides the platform for users to buy and sell these recyclables to meet the demand yet encourage recycling.

How we built it

The app was built using React Native, with Firestore as our database.

Challenges we ran into

There was a challenge trying parse public information provided by NEA on the recycling bins into a readable format for our application.

Understanding the pain points felt by Singaporeans towards recycling. Our team spent quite a bit of time, especially within a 24 hr hackathon, to identifying pain points felt by Singaporeans so as to curate features that are specific to them.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Implementing a working application within 24 hours.

What we learned

Managing time between task tracking, prototyping and code implementation.
