Inspiration
Women safety is still an issue in today's modern world. Even though people are more connected than ever, women still feel unsafe, especially when they are traveling alone. In fact, 65% of women have faced street harassment when traveling alone. This inspired me to create an app that helps women receive help, if they ever feel unsafe.
What it does
This app allows the user to share their location via Google maps, when they are traveling alone. The user is also able to view other women who are using this app. In case the user needs help, they can access her contacts to call someone, connect with other WeConnect users nearby, or call the authorities. Moreover, this app allows the user to add contacts as well.
How we built it
I built it using Figma.
Challenges we ran into
There were a few challenges I faced while doing this project. There was issues with our team, which ultimately led me to doing a solo project. Additionally, I had to find ways to make this app easy to use while still having its purpose in mind. Because there are many apps out there that have the same idea, I had to design mine in a unique way.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Despite having a few setbacks, I was still able to design a working app prototype. This app is user-friendly and intuitive, while also having a minimalist design.
What we learned
I learnt how to manage my time wisely, as I was participating in another hackathon as well. I also learnt how to design better.
What's next for WeConnect
I can add more features to this app such as showing unsafe areas, integrating self-defense learning, etc.
