Inspiration
India ranks 137 out of 167 in Women, Peace and Security Index as per the 2019 report by Georgetown University’s Institute. Rather than sitting silently, watching, and ignoring news like Nirbhaya's case, where the women's, due to the lack of functionalities like on-click help they get harrased and crimes like this increasing day by day. So, we decided to take an initiative on this national issue by building an app named, We Care, which is an easy-to-use platform that acts as both- a guide and a savior.
What it does
User first need to register by specifying email, pasword, phone number, address, name and emergency contact. It has two modes:
- Emergency Mode: This mode has following features:
- Send text with location: User can share current location with her emergency contact number. To save time, direct message is sent instead of opening it on messenger.
- Call Emergency/Women Helpline: Using this feature, a call to the emergency contact or women helpline can be directly made.
- Fake Call: Here user need to specify the Name for the incoming fake call and she has to select the duration after which call will be made.
- Play Recorded Call/Siren: One-sided call recordings are provided so that in case she feels insecure she can pretened to talk to someone..
- Safe Mode: This mode has following features:
- Learn Self Defense: Here the user will be provided with the embeded youtube videos where she can learn some useful and life savier techniques.
- Chatbot: A friendly chatbot whom the user can interact with and share the exploitation she has experiend and gets some guidance.
- Crime rate: Here user can see the crime rates of any district of India. She just have to select the state and city from the dropdowns provided and she can see the no. of murders, deaths due to dowry, acid attack, cruelty by relatives, and kidnapping incidents in a bar graph. We've shown data for 2019 provided by Indian Govt.. Link
- Safety Tips: Here some tips that she can read in her free time. As prevention is better than cure.
How we built it
We used Flutter for building a cross-platform app. For database, we used Firebase. And for getting user's location, we've used GeoCoding API. We used wackLock dependecy to implement fake call.
Challenges we ran into
One major chanllange that we faced was to get all the states and cities of the country and show it's crime rate. One more challange that we faced was to make a fake call, for that we used some of the fuctionalities of flutter and integrated the dependencies to make a fake call. Whlie we were trying to make our application offline, so that it can be used from low network area, we were facing some dependency conflict in flutter.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud of the funtionalities that we have provided in the application for fake call, directly calling and messaging to the emergency contact/helpline number(no need of opening the app), this functionalitites makes protection for women one click away. Also playing recorded call and siren is one of the very good feature in the application where user can play the recorded call to rescue from unsafe situations.
What we learned
We are a team of only two members. We learned that with dedication and hardwork you can do wonders. During this hackathon we learnt how to brainstorm. How to optmize space and time complexity.
What's next for We Care
We are planning to work on the offline feature of We Care. We'll also going to launch it on playstore.
