Inspiration
The traffic of wild-life is a global threat to native species all around the world, as it is a risk to each ecosystems’ biodiversity, as not only the animals are placed in other habitats causing imbalance in the local fauna, but also as it is a major cause of animal extinction and various social and environmental consequences, including disease transmission. Inspired by all groups involved around the environmental cause - Federal and Environmental Police, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), biologists, veterinarians, and other science-based organizations - and the lack of a database connection shared with them, the integrated data-base is created to ease these professionals’ work in the field, apprehension, rehabilitation and release of fauna and flora back to it’s natural environment. Gaia is supported by scientific, technological and legislative information.
What it does
Gaia is a database platform that organizes and storages data about trafficked flora and fauna registered by the organization or person responsible (Federal and Environmental Police, NGOs, scientific staff, etc) for each specific information - i.e. a police officer is responsible for registering an information about the charge, who was fined and how many animals were apprehended; CETAS (Wildlife Reception and Rehabilitation Centers) is responsible to feed the database with information about the animal health and prognosis. To optimize the database usage, the team suggests an open source environment for creation and upgrading the applications, to inaugurate the system we developed an app to assist in the interpretation of ambiental laws according to the situation, collect data of occurrences, provide historical contextualization and inform the correct destination for the trafficked victims. This App may be used by CETAS workers, government officials, and researchers, enabling data intelligence ranging from epidemiologic insights reaching to illegal traffic routes analysis.
How I built it
The mockup was built using the Ionic and Angular Frameworks, we choose these technologies in order to harness the versatility and maturid of them. For the Backend we choose nodeJS and Express, these technologies offer not only a fast way to set up the project but a viable environment to escalate it. To version control we utilized GitHub.
Challenges We ran into
Although this is a subject that affects us all, sooner or later, the expertise and experience dealing with the issue are very concentrated. Our first issue was to understand how the information flows, if it does at all, between the actors, once we had a grasp of it our first impulse was to create an automation of identification and data collection, however we notice a couple projects whom had tackle the issue the same way, IA plus automation, so the second challenge was to confirm the value of our proposition, to do that we had chats with a IBAMA (Brazil Environment authority) official, a NGO employee and with two Police Officers, one that works with environment crimes, and another that works at a region with big incidence of this type of crimes. By those conversations we took that the process of collecting information was just a fraction of the problem, the value of our solutions will be to provide information and not simply collect it. We also had a couple problems structuring which data we had to store, and we decided to make it modular so each form would feed the base and the retrieving of those tables could occur in a customized manner.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud to have achieved such a user-friendly and straightforward solution to data management and visualization. Our very informative yet clean dashboard makes it an obvious upgrade to a traditional .CSV table filling and tedious information searching. Gaia is named after the Greek personification of the Earth as a goddess (Gaea in English) and it’s purpose revolves around
What I learned
The structure of the anti-trafficking system has a lot of good things set to go, however the lack of access to very simple data creates a dust around all the good efforts. Getting data is awesome and opens up a lot of opportunities, however these opportunities must be abstracted so peoples, and animals, lives may be benefited by the collection of data.
What's next for WebApp Gaia
Offer to link other solutions of data collection to a common data storage Implement the Legal observations every time an officer makes an arrest, making sure the criminal gets charged by all the indictment it can be charged at the criminal. Implement a history map to identify and relate common traffic routes Use the same history map to identify the probable origin of a animal easing the return to nature
