What it does
Senses motion through supersonic sensors and uses a vibrational motor to indicate direction and proximity of objects/people.
Web-shooters launch projectiles and retrieve them via a rewinding DC motor.
How we built it
We used an Arduino Mega to control our spider sense system by sending PWM signals to the vibration motors and reading the sensor signals via UART. Physically, we constructed our spider-sense system using Velcro to secure it on our demonstrators back, chains of jumper cables to breadboards for our solderless connections, and PCB boards which we soldered our vibration motors to.
We also used an Arduino UNO to control the retrieval mechanism of our web-shooters. For the body of the web-shooters, we modeled it using TinkerCAD and printed our parts using the BambuLab H2D. We used some string twirled and secured around our motor to construct the retrieval mechanism.
Challenges we ran into
Sensors picking up noise was a big issue we ran into, as was the general complexity of the project. Originally we had intended to use 5 motors. But upon realizing the sheer volume of wires needed, we pivoted to a much sleeker design of two sensors on the left and right temples.
For the web-shooters, we had some considerable issues with our microelectronics and basic construction. We had also some back emf that was significant enough to warrant us to try to reduce it down.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We're proud of being able to submit basically two projects in one and with how adaptable we became with the rigors of the project.
What we learned
As one of our biggest issues was with scope, we learned to set realistic expectations and to better communicate and discuss with one another especially when we run into issues in our challenge. For quite a few of our members, they also learned the basics of programming on the Arduino IDE and how flexible it is with regard to embedded programming.
What's next for Web Warriors - Spider Sense
We hope to maybe refine this design one day and to include more sensors for our spider-sense system. For our webshooters, perhaps we'll look at improving their usability and motor functionality.
