Web Time Tracker

Inspiration

Due to COVID-19, this past year has been challenging for many people, whether through adaptation to working from home or learning online. Our team was inspired to create a chrome extension that would allow users to be more aware of their time on a screen and have effective time management.

What it does

Web Time Tracker is a handy chrome extension to track one's screen time and increase productivity. The user first inputs an amount of time they would like to spend on an indicated website per week. Using that information, Web Time Tracker tracks the amount of time a user spends on every website and creates notifications when the screen time limit has been reached. The extension is customizable to the user, allowing them to reset their data tracking at any time. It generates a quick and easy reminder for users to get back on track. Web Time Tracker is great for those working from home or learning online.

How we built it

Our team used Sandbox for live-updated collaboration. Due to the fact that most of the code was open-sourced, we were inspired to research more about related projects and how they were coded. The program was written in javascript, CSS, and html.

Challenges we ran into

As first-time hackers, we needed learn more about Hackathons and grasp the concept of the structure of creating a project. The languages used in this project was also new to most of our team members, but also such a joy to learn. As a result of working with unfamiliar technology, we experienced an initial decrease in productivity, but also expanded our knowledge in computer science.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

As beginners, we are extremely proud of completing our first Hackathon and project. This experience allowed us to expand on ideas and creativity outside of university classes. While all interactions were remote, we effectively communicated and exchanged ideas.

What we learned

Learning how to code in html, CSS, and javascript was a fulfilling experience. We also learned the amount of involvement and difficulty of creating a project from start to finish. Lastly, communication at regular intervals is essential to working effectively as a team.

What's next for Web Time Tracker Chrome Extension

We hope to expand our ideas by creating a visual graph of the different websites visited. We also wish to collect the data overtime in order to give users awareness of their long-term internet habits.
