Inspiration
The web contains enormous amounts of useful information, but much of it is trapped in inconsistent, unstructured HTML. We wanted to build a simple example of how web data can be collected and transformed into structured information that is easier for software and AI systems to use.
What it does
Web Intelligence Pipeline takes a public website URL and runs it through a complete data pipeline:
Acquire → Extract → Transform → Load → Enrich
It retrieves the webpage, extracts useful content and metadata, cleans and normalizes the information, stores it in SQLite, and can optionally use an LLM to generate structured insights such as the organization, industry, products, and target customers.
How we built it
The project was built in Python using requests for web acquisition, BeautifulSoup for HTML extraction, Pydantic for structured data validation, and SQLite for storage. An optional LLM enrichment layer processes the cleaned web content and returns structured information.
The project is designed as a simple command-line application so the entire pipeline can be demonstrated from a single URL.
Challenges we ran into
Websites do not follow a consistent structure, so extracting useful information reliably from different pages was one of the main challenges. We also had to account for invalid URLs, HTTP errors, missing metadata, inconsistent text, and large amounts of unnecessary webpage content.
Keeping the project small while still demonstrating a complete data engineering workflow was another challenge.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We built a working end-to-end Web Data Engineering pipeline rather than a standalone scraper. The project demonstrates the complete process of acquiring raw web data, transforming it into structured records, persisting it in a database, and making it available for downstream AI enrichment.
We are especially proud that the core pipeline works without requiring an LLM API key.
What we learned
We learned how much work is involved in turning raw web content into reliable structured data. Web extraction is only the first step—the cleaning, validation, storage, and handling of inconsistent sources are equally important.
We also learned how LLMs can be used as a downstream enrichment layer after traditional data engineering processes have produced clean inputs.
What's next for Web Intelligence Pipeline
Future versions could support multiple pages and domains, scheduled data collection, additional data sources and APIs, stronger content extraction, data quality monitoring, and a web-based interface for exploring collected datasets.
The long-term goal would be to evolve the project from a simple pipeline into a lightweight platform for building structured datasets from public web information.
