Inspiration
India has millions of handloom weavers, and most of them earn far less than their work is worth. Weaver cooperatives exist to fix this, but many still run on paper registers, phone calls and WhatsApp messages. Orders get lost, payments are delayed, and individual weavers have no leverage, so middlemen set the price.
We asked: what if a cooperative could run like a small startup, with one dashboard and one shared voice when negotiating with buyers?
What it does
WeaveLink is a cooperative digitisation and collective bargaining platform for handloom weavers.
- Member management: a digital register of weavers, skills and looms
- Order pooling: combine small orders across members to serve bigger buyers
- Payments tracking: clear records of who is owed what, and when
- Collective bargaining: shared price benchmarks so a cooperative negotiates as one group instead of as individuals
Who it's for
- Primary users: handloom cooperatives and weaver groups
- Buyers: boutiques, exporters and retailers who want reliable bulk supply
- Underserved market: weavers are largely ignored by mainstream business software
Business model
- Subscription: a low monthly fee per cooperative for the management dashboard
- Transaction fee: [X]% on orders routed through the platform
- Buyer-side listing: premium placement for verified buyers
- Weavers keep more of the margin, so the platform earns only when they earn.
How we built it
- Frontend: [e.g. React]
- Backend: [e.g. Node.js / Express]
- Database: [e.g. MongoDB]
- Analytics / ML: [e.g. basic price trend analysis]
Challenges we faced
- Designing for users with low digital literacy, so the UI stays simple and [regional language support]
- [Add one real technical challenge you hit]
- Modelling fair collective pricing without hardware or IoT
What we learned
Technology alone does not fix a broken supply chain. The product has to fit how cooperatives already work.
What's next
Pilot with a few real cooperatives, add regional languages, and integrate digital payments.
