Inspiration
The company Spire and how they collect weather information inSPIREd our team to build a project built around the weather. After much brainstorming, our team decided to merge the concept of Wordle with the weather, creating Weather Word Whirl.
What it does
It is a game like Wordle which only has weather-related words and has special features like a changing background as the user enters more correct guesses. The program also has a definition and a fun fact section.
How we built it
We used JavaScript, HTML/CSS on Visual Studio Code Live Share which allowed us to work together on the same files.
Challenges we ran into
At first, we struggled with the backend aspects of our project, like how to clone divs every time the user submits a word. Some of our team members were new to programming, so keeping up with everyone updated was a challenge. Later on, our team had trouble with formatting using CSS. It was difficult to align our elements. Although it’s not perfect, we managed to create a functional and organized game.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are very proud of our project as a whole because we feel like we turned a well-known game into a specific concept and got to add a good amount of additional features like the changing background, definition, and fun facts. We’re glad that we managed to understand the basics behind Wordle and made a small data table for our worldle game using Javascript.
What we learned
We have learned that it is important to keep our code organized especially with multiple people working on the same code as everyone needs to understand how it works. We also learned specific things like the clone function which was confusing at the beginning but ended up being a highly useful tool for our program. Although most of our team members hated CSS, we ended up learning how to style a website and make it look well.
What's next for Weather Word Whirl
We can always add more features like our next task would be to add more audio that is special to the weather in the game. We would have also enjoyed adding the Spire API to gather information about the weather and use it to make premade levels based on the weather.
