Inspiration

Weather forecast of TV and extreme heatwaves last few summers in Portugal and South Europe.

What it does

This app shows the weather forecast in a ways we believe make understanding the current weather and climate situation easier:

  • Instead of coloured blobs maps that are common in weather apps nowadays we show actual cloud, rain and sun symbols on a map, same as a usual TV forecast would do.
  • We show “warming stripes” that illustrate how temperatures changed over the last century in this location (and not everyone realises that each area would receive climate change in a different way).
  • We display Wet Bulb temperature values, explain the concept and alert users when heat stress could be too much.

How we built it

Challenges we ran into

For weather apps (and we have experience with a few) it is always a challenge to find the right balance between the familiar and the novel and between the complexity of available data and what general public would be willing to use.

We believe that this balance is different depending on the climate situation where specific user lives, so the main question is whether we got it right for a significant group of people this time.
