Inspiration
The inspiration behind Wealthwise is to address the challenges faced by Toronto's black community and empower individuals to overcome them. It aims to provide resources, opportunities, and support in various aspects of life, including cultural celebrations, economic empowerment, mentorship, financial literacy, healthcare access, and education. The goal is to create a sense of unity, resilience, and prosperity within the community.
What it does:
Wealthwise is an app that offers a range of features and services to uplift the black community in Toronto. It includes: Cultural Calendar: A calendar that showcases events and celebrations that unite and highlight the diverse communities within Toronto's black population. Black-Owned Business Directory: A search feature that allows users to find and support black-owned businesses in their neighbourhoods, promoting economic resilience and growth. Mentorship Program: A platform that connects experienced mentors with young individuals, providing guidance, support, and opportunities to help them achieve their aspirations and build a successful future. AI Receipt Analyzer: An AI-powered tool that analyzes receipts and empowers users to make informed financial choices, promoting financial literacy and the ability to build generational wealth. Healthcare Access Hub: A resource hub that helps increase healthcare access by providing information on doctors and allowing users to easily book appointments. Educational Pathways Navigator: A guide that assists individuals in navigating educational opportunities, ensuring that everyone, regardless of their background, can access and shape their educational journey.
How we built it
Wealthwise was built with user interface and user experience in mind. We used Python, CSS, HTML, and JavaScript along with the Django framework to provide an easy-to-use and visually appealing interface. On the backend, we used MongoDB as the database to save the files, and MATLAB to show the graphs of the trends in scholarships. We also used ChatGPT's API to summarize the contents of the receipt and output the reasoning, which was given into a fine-tuned classifier model that we trained with Cohere, using a custom-built dataset to distinguish whether the purchase is frivolous, necessary, or discretionary. We then used this output to have Cohere's API to output an assessment based on the classification, as well as the receipt contents.
Challenges we ran into
A few challenges that we ran into include:
- Integrated the front and back end as we had to ensure seamless communication between the front-end and back-end components of the app and found it difficult to implement using Django and other technologies that we were originally unfamiliar with using.
- Time management: It was difficult to complete so much and ensure great user- interaction and experience while meeting the project deadlines and milestones throughout the development process.
- Implementing APIs: It was time-consuming to understand API documentation and ensure they worked as expected while ensuring a great user experience.
- Designing the user interface: It was challenging to create a visually appealing UI that is consistent across different devices and meets usability and accessibility standards.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud of creating Wealthwise in the short time frame given, since it was one of our first hackathons.
What we learned
We learned how to collaborate as a team and use new technologies, such as MongoDB and Cohere.
What's next for WealthWiseWiki
We hope to deploy WealthWiseWiki on the app store and have it used by the public!
