Inspiration

Before starting our project, we wanted to validate the problem through a user survey. We surveyed 10 people from our locality and asked them their views about recycling and reusing materials. Here are the inferences from our survey,

Survey

We were inspired from the inferences of the survey and we wanted to make a wholesome solution which can deal all the 3 major problems which are mentioned above.

What it does

The core features provided by We Recycle are :

  • Computer vision and deep learning to find if an item is recyclable. If it is found to be not recyclable - alternatives are suggested.
  • Provides personalized suggestions to repurpose and reuse items.
  • Helps you find the nearby recycle bins on a map.
  • Gamified achievements system.

'We Recycle' aims to promote the 3R's - Reduce, Reuse and Recycle through local communities. With the above wholesome features, users can find information about a particular item (if it is recyclable or not), disposing the item on a nearby recycle bin and gaining achievements as batches.

Commercial value and business model

  • The size of circular economy is ~4.5 billion dollar market.
  • We Recycle can be incorporated into a startup which can play a crucial role in Circular economy. -Revenue streams : - margins can be taken from profits from the recycle bins.
    - affiliate fees from eco-friendly alternative products that are suggested by our application.

How we built it

We built the mobile application using Flutter and Material UI. We implemented deep learning to find the object using a pre-trained CNN model (we also trained it with some items) on Tensorflow Lite. The following is the detailed tech stack that we used :

Challenges we ran into

  • Time management was challenging. We literally had to complete the demo video within the last 15 minutes.
  • Brainstorming was pretty challenging but we are very happy to have come up with this idea.
  • Implementing the ML model was new to us. But, thanks to Youtube and Stackoverflow.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • Making a successful submission at Athena Hack 2021.
  • This is one of the most technically complex applications we've worked on.
  • We are very happy to have contributed a part in making a sustainable circular economy.

What we learned

  • Alot of Flutter.
  • Maps and geo-coding.
  • Using Tensorflow Lite in Flutter.

What's next for We Recycle

  • Making it a startup and trying to gain beta users in our locality.
  • Commercialize it with a better business model.
