Inspiration

Over 3.5 billion people—nearly half the world’s population—still live in areas where digital access is nonexistent. In rural Africa, traditional infrastructure models fail because the return on investment cannot justify the upfront costs. We were inspired by the idea that digital exclusion is not a technological problem—it’s an economic one. Our mission was to reimagine the economics of connectivity so that even the most remote villages could become part of the global digital ecosystem.

What it does

We Connect the Unconnected is a vertically integrated digital infrastructure platform that brings connectivity and opportunity to rural Africa. By deploying low-cost decentralized communication systems, we establish profitable local networks in villages previously considered unreachable. Through this infrastructure, we provide:

  • Smartphone-based access to the internet via local towers
  • Financial services such as credit scoring and mobile payments
  • Educational and vocational training videos
  • Global digital job opportunities (e.g., AI data annotation)
  • E-commerce and digital content distribution All services are accessible from day one through smartphones offered on installment plans.

How we built it

We started by designing a decentralized wireless communication system that drastically reduced capital expenditures. Our hardware partners helped develop low-power, village-scale base stations that could run on solar energy. We trained local staff in basic operations and maintenance, enabling a franchise-like model for sustainable growth. Our digital platform was built using cloud infrastructure optimized for low-bandwidth environments, and our fintech services were layered in collaboration with mobile money operators and microfinance institutions.

Challenges we ran into

  • Affordability vs. sustainability: Balancing ultra-low pricing for end users with the need for long-term profitability was a constant challenge.
  • Digital literacy: Many users had never used a smartphone or digital services before.
  • Infrastructure reliability: Ensuring consistent uptime with solar-powered base stations in harsh weather conditions required innovation in both hardware and system redundancy.
  • Cross-border operations: Operating in multiple Francophone countries with different regulations, partners, and currencies introduced complexity.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • Reached over 400 villages across Benin and Senegal in just 3.5 years.
  • Enabled villagers to earn up to 100x more income through global digital jobs.
  • Achieved near break-even on infrastructure investment in under 10 months per village.
  • Built a scalable model now being expanded via franchise into new regions like Zambia.
  • Gained recognition as one of the most impactful rural connectivity startups in Africa.

What we learned

Simplicity is power: Providing a few essential services well (connectivity, credit, jobs) creates outsized impact.

  • Trust matters: Building relationships with village leaders and local agents was key to adoption.
  • Digital divides are also psychological: The moment people saw real-time earnings from their phones, usage exploded.
  • Adaptability wins: Each village required localized adjustments in pricing, service mix, and support.

What's next for We Connect the Unconnected

We’re expanding into five new countries in the next 18 months through both direct operations and franchise partnerships. Upcoming initiatives include:

  • Launching offline-first educational apps for rural youth
  • Expanding our AI gig-work marketplace to include new verticals
  • Partnering with major firms to offer last-mile distribution for physical goods
  • Integrating digital ID and health services into the platform
  • Rolling out a universal rural credit score accepted by banks, telcos, and employers

Our vision is to turn every unconnected village into a digitally empowered hub—not just for access, but for income, dignity, and self-determination.
