Inspiration
The song "We are the world" and my dad were my inspirations. My dad came from El Salvador at a young age and well thankfully has prospered in this country. I just found out recently, that he has recently started helping a little town in El Salvador grow a bit, he didn't even know this town existed before connecting through social media with a guy from that town. Through Whatsapp, he connects with him and trusts enough to send money to, that person is from the little town so he goes off with my dad's money to get the supplies my dad gives him money for. In return, he always sends my dad, the receipts of what he buys and the quantity. In order to ensure that his money is actually being used for good, the guy sends my dad pictures, videos and even video chats with him in the moment of distributions. A few weeks ago, my dad went to El Salvador and for the first time visited the town and the gratitude those people showed was so beautiful. My dad went with the guy to go shop for more things and for the first time did the distribution right there in person. He says it was the best most wholesome feeling seeing your contribution affect the lives of others. With the recent events in Haiti, it reminded me of when artists back in the 2000's came together to sing the song "We Are The World" which led me to the original one. The lyrics, the intentions of the song, with my dad doing this really sweet thing, and the whole situation of the pandemic, I came to realize that hey there is some good in this world. I would like to think or believe that in hard times, if we got the resources, we would give. So I thought okay, maybe I can create an app that embodies this.
What it does
The app will display "cases" where your donations or funds are needed. The "case" could be a person, an orphanage, a school, siblings, or small organizations like maybe animal rescue ones. When you select a "case" the following information will be displayed(dependent on what type of case): a bit about them, name, what do they need, how much has been funded, where the money has been used, has it gone to food, clothes, shelter, etc. You will also be able to see videos and pictures of what has already been donated or footage of maybe after effects of the damage by the natural disaster. So the app will show you the countries where our organization has employees and volunteers located. You will be able to select a country of your choice and then the results will be cases. If you click on your case, information will be given, you can donate and then a notification will be given when a video/picture has been uploaded regarding your donation. In home, you are able to see the donations of the people you follow, you can see (if they want to share it publicly) the reactions of their donations, some updated videos/pictures of the cases you were interested in and donated for. Your feed will be filled with good news, we're trying to spread positivity and at the same time spread awareness on the issue of poverty. You will have your own profile and will be able to chat to others whether people you follow or volunteers that are in charge of your case.
How I built it
I used Figma to design this app.
Challenges I ran into
There weren't many challenges, I think it was just about how best to do the layout but besides that it was all good.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
I feel that this would be an amazing concept to bring people together and really change the lives of others especially kids. Kids are so pure and they really are out future so if we invest in them then hey we are changing the world.
What I learned
I learned to use new Figma components, learned how to do scrolling better and just how to do designing.
What's next for We Are The World
To actually do an application for it, do more research on how to start a startup, how to do the funding and yeah hopefully one day make it come true.
