Inspiration

We wanted to create a resource that victims of harassment would be able to use in order to gain access to the assistance they need to get out of a potentially dangerous situation.

What it does

We are one allows users to submit any issue they are facing to either a ChatBot or a form in order ensure the proper help is received. The software then proceeds to sort keywords and generates help depending on what issues were reported by the user.

How we built it

My team began on a template from bootstrap; from there we proceeded to code the website according to the content we wished to include as well as creating some small innovative additions such as the ChatBot and the utilization of the Google Map API.

Challenges we ran into

A major challenge for us was that of creating an independent ChatBot from scratch. The main difficulty was the automatic replies depending on what keywords were placed in the message. Luckily, one of my team members was more well-versed with this concept and it helped us overcome this obstacle.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Our project won the title of "Best Overall Hack" at Starterhacks (hosted by the University of Waterloo) 2017.

What we learned

Overall, this project helped me increase my proficiency at html5 as well as understanding the concept behind bootstrap. I was also able to practice my pitching skills towards an audience and keeping everything that we made condensed into simple terms. I learned a great deal from my team in terms of programming, especially the concept of SQL and nodejs; both of which I had never been fully exposed to prior to the hackathon.

What's next for We Are One

We are currently working on business development as well as fully scaling our database. In addition, we are reaching out to different individuals in order to gain a better grasp of how we can truly help solve the problem, rather than create a software people can't use consistently.
