Inspiration
WAYWISE is designed to bridge the growing gap between tourists and locals. In my day to day life, I constantly witness and hear stories on the growing animosity or bridges between locals and tourists - often caused by the misunderstanding of culture, appropriate behavior and lack of mutual respect.
What it does
WAYWISE is your personal cultural guide on the go - allowing users to choose the country being visited, enter daily schedules and receive notifications tailored to activities being done at the time, with advice on appropriate mannerisms, greetings and clothing. Get in touch with locals for first hand perspectives and advice, as well as connect, build relationships and exchange culture through posts. All of your information necessary to know before a trip is just a few clicks away with our countless information pages on table manners, traditions etc. for your selected country. Connect various watches, save travel history and tailor the app to your liking, by saving preferred genres of notifications.
Travel smart. Connect Deeper.
How we built it
I created the App logos and sketches using procreate. I used Figma to create the mockup/prototype, as well as to create an example of what notifications would look like. Slidebean was used for the pitch deck/slides.
Most of my time was dedicated to designing the prototype and figuring out how the app would actually function. I researched into features that would make an app more appealing and user friendly, turning ideas into functions and implementing them into FIGMA as I developed my project further.
Challenges I ran into
At the beginning of this project, I had never used FIGMA or Slidebean, or had ever attempted creating my own brand and prototypes. It took me a while to get accustomed to using the platforms (which added even more pressure due to the nearing deadline). Sketching products was completely new to me - I downloaded procreate just to complete some of the sketches. I had to maintain my resilience through this whole project, especially because I had no one to rely on to delegate tasks to when I had no idea what to do.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
Honestly, I am quite proud of myself just for finishing this project with such a short deadline. I never would have expected to be able to use applications such as FIGMA and develop prototypes (though it did take a while to learn), create sketches or even film myself carrying out an elevator pitch.
What I learned
Aside from the many skills I learnt from using FIGMA and slidebean, I also learnt about the steps and processes in designing and creating an app, such as market research, prototype development and function and layout design.
Most of all, I learnt more about myself. I think this project helped me grow as a person, developing my work ethic and confidence the more I worked.
What's next for WAYWISE
Following the results of this competition, I may want to actually learn how to code this app (or another app), as this project has sparked a passion within me to actually learn on how to bring ideas such as this one to life.
