Inspiration
As students, it is very difficult in the current job markets to land jobs, yet alone get an interview. With things as competitive as they are, it is more important than ever to stand out. And with the amount of resources available now, it is easy to feel overwhelmed with information and not being left with a clear roadmap of how to build a stronger resume in order to land their dream role. This is where WayPointAI comes in.
What it does
WayPointAI is an application that serves as a career roadmap for students looking for entry and mid level jobs. Students can select their target role(for example Data Analyst). Currently, we have 9 roles available in the tech space. Once a user selects their target role, the application compares the resume to what people with these roles have on their resumes. It then outputs a dated roadmap. It includes the must dos with highest priority, whether it be certification, portfolio project, or course. It also provides real links as sources for users to access in order to help them accomplish it.
How we built it
We built a React web app with a python API. 9 tech roles are covered, ranging from software engineer to product manager at the internship, entry, and mid levels. A resume builder is also included in order to turn your experience into bullet points that you can reuse.
Challenges we ran into
A challenge that we found was figuring out what data to use. Scraping Linkedin would have been most ideal in terms of getting live, up to date information, but due to their policies it was not feasible. We ended up using different open databases such as O*NET in order to gain access to resumes. Also figuring out what models to use was quite challenging as well. Initially we were using a basic resume analysis model but we found that to be too general. We are currently using Hugging Face models, Qwen3-0.6b for the resume builder and Smolifier-resume-analyzer.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud of the roadmap that our application provides. It gives students specifics on what they need to do, placing priorities so students know what to focus on. A common issue that a lot of people face is not knowing where to start, and this really helps in terms of giving direction so they can work towards landing their target roles. We are also proud of the fact that we were ethical in gathering our data, only using open data.
What we learned
While building WayPointAI, we learned how important it was to define interfaces before actually building. There were 5 components, all which depending on each other in some way. We had to agree on what each of the components needed as inputs. We had to think as a team rather than just writing individual code. We also learned the value of shipping early stubs, having placeholder profiles as mock data so we could work on the components in parallel rather than waiting to be unblocked.
What's next for WayPointAI
Currently, the scope of our app is mainly catered toward tech-based careers, but ideally our app will expand beyond that and cover any roles, such as ones in health, business, and engineering. We also have a resume builder in progress and are trying to implement an AI model in it. Ideally, we would have our own model or at least have other ones fine tuned.
