Inspiration
I was inspired to build Waypoint after going on a month-long trip to LA right after exams. Since I had almost no time to prepare, I ended up spending a lot of my vacation time researching places to visit, planning activities, and figuring out how everything fit together.
That experience made me realize how difficult trip planning can be. There are countless websites, reviews, maps, and recommendations to sort through, and it can be overwhelming to turn all of that information into one cohesive plan.
I wanted to create a tool that could do the planning for you.
What I Built
Waypoint is an AI-powered travel planner that creates personalized vacation guides based on a user's needs and preferences.
Users can enter information such as their destination, trip length, budget, interests, and accessibility needs. Waypoint then uses AI to generate a customized itinerary with activities and recommendations tailored to the traveler.
The goal is simple: spend less time planning your vacation and more time enjoying it.
How I Built It
I built Waypoint as a full-stack web application using Lovable, combining a user-friendly interface with AI-powered trip generation.
I designed the experience so users can enter their preferences and receive a structured travel guide instead of having to search through dozens of different websites themselves.
I focused on making the application feel simple and intuitive while still giving the AI enough information to create personalized recommendations.
What I Learned
Building Waypoint taught me that creating an AI application isn't just about getting an AI model to generate text. The quality of the final result depends heavily on how information is collected, how prompts are structured, and how the generated information is presented to the user.
I also learned a lot about designing around real-world user problems. Instead of building AI just because it was interesting, I wanted to use it to solve a problem I had personally experienced.
Challenges
One of my biggest challenges was getting the AI-generated travel guides to feel consistently useful and personalized. I also ran into technical issues with loading images and making different parts of the application work together reliably.
Because this was built during a hackathon, I had to make decisions about which features were most important and focus on building a functional experience rather than trying to add everything at once.
Ultimately, Waypoint showed me how quickly an idea can turn into a working product when you combine AI with thoughtful product design.
