Inspiration
Our team was inspired by the loneliness epidemic that Generation Z is currently facing. More than 39% of young adults have mentioned that they often feel lonely and disconnected from society.
What it does
With WayFinder, we attempted to counter this epidemic by developing a mobile application that allows users to find landmarks or waypoints located on a map and meet up with new potential friends. These waypoints provide unique badges to those who visit them which provides an incentive for users to explore to new locations. In order to receive these badges, the user must take a selfie with the app's requested amount of people at the location.
How we built it
We initially created the design with Figma and built the application using the Expo Framework for React Native. We also incorporated Firebase Database for user accounts and Google Places. For the selfie feature, we utilized Google Vision.
Challenges we ran into
Our team, as a whole, did not have much experience in mobile development but we stood tall and pursued this project despite the learning curves each of us faced utilizing these programs.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud of the intricate design we created in Figma along with our implementation of React-Native-maps to make our idea come to life. Another accomplishment that we are proud of is that we were able to produce and demo an early version of the application.
What we learned
Through this weekend, each of us learned key skills such as working on back-end/front-end, designing, and working as a team. We also learned how to work under pressure and a hard deadline.
What's next for Wayfinder
We hope to continue working on WayFinder after this hackathon and implementing new features. Some features include an updated and sleeker UI, age verification for users, favoriting locations, and a forum section to discuss waypoints.
