Inspiration
Travel planning has become overwhelming with endless generic options, causing decision fatigue. We wanted to create a solution that uses AI to provide personalized, narrative-driven itineraries that actually match individual travel styles and preferences, rather than one-size-fits-all recommendations.
What it does
Wayfinder is a celestial-themed travel planner that transforms user preferences into perfectly tailored travel itineraries using the Gemini API, where users take a personality test, set their budget and destination, and receive a custom travel plan matching their unique travel style and interests.
How we built it
We built Wayfinder using React for the frontend with celestial-themed CSS animations and responsive design, Flask for the backend API handling business logic and AI integration, and the Gemini API for personalized itinerary generation, while using Figma to design our intuitive user interface and celestial visual theme before implementation.
Challenges we ran into
We faced significant challenges with AI wrapping, requiring extensive prompt engineering and testing to format AI responses consistently, along with complex API integration managing Gemini responses and error handling, while also ensuring smooth frontend-backend coordination and balancing automation with user control to prevent information overload.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We're proud of creating a seamless AI-powered personalization system that genuinely understands travel preferences, building an engaging celestial-themed interface with smooth animations, developing a robust full-stack application that delivers personalized recommendations, and successfully integrating complex AI capabilities into an intuitive user experience.
What we learned
We learned advanced prompt engineering techniques for consistent AI outputs, full-stack development with React and Flask integration, celestial UI/UX design principles that create emotional connections, how to structure datasets for effective AI personalization, and the importance of balancing automation with user control in recommendation systems.
What's next for Wayfinder
Next for Wayfinder includes developing social features for sharing itineraries and travel experiences, integrating real-time pricing and local events, creating a mobile app for on-the-go travel planning, enhancing AI personalization based on user feedback, and building collaborative trip planning features for groups and families.
