Inspiration
The MSC is easy to get lost in, and GPS can't tell you which hallway you're in.
What it does
Point your phone camera down a hallway and pick a room. Wayfinder works out exactly where you are and shows an arrow to get there.
How we built it
We walked the MSC's 2nd floor with an iPhone LiDAR scanner and rebuilt it as a 3D map. Live camera frames are matched against that map to find your position. Room numbers are read from the video and placed on the map, and the official floor plans fill in rooms we didn't film.
Challenges we ran into
Stitching separate LiDAR walks into one accurate map, and routing to rooms we never filmed.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
A working 3D map of the MSC's 2nd floor with step-by-step guidance from just a phone camera.
What we learned
Indoors, the camera can find where you are far better than GPS.
What's next for Wayfinder
We see this working in stores like H-E-B, guiding shoppers straight to the products they're looking for.
