Inspiration for the problem you are addressing?
We noticed that in this fast-paced technology age more teenagers are relying on driving, instead of more eco-friendly ways to commute such as biking or walking. Driving has become the mainstream form of transportation and we planned to create a sleek website to avoid this. People are unaware of what carbon footprints are and how they can make simple differences. We showed them what they would gain through walking and biking, as well as recommendations for specific routes they take daily.
How does your project positively impacts teenagers?
Our web-app provides the time, distance, gas price, calories burnt, and carbon footprint from a certain starting point to a destination if you were to bike, walk, or drive. We give recommendations based on the results. Then, our user decides which path to take and is given a map with directions of their route, specific to if they were biking, walking, or driving.
What are your Project Features?
We used materialize.css as a framework for the website, which we were new to. Then, we learned the Google Maps Distance Matrix API and used it to find the distance and time between two locations. We created complex algorithms with machine learning that determined the carbon footprint, gas prices, and calories burnt. We implemented the Google Maps API one more time by providing maps for the different forms of transportation: biking, walking, and driving.
What did you use to build your project? (language, API's, libraries, etc)
We used javascript, HTML, and CSS. We used the Google Maps API, which was mentioned in more detail above.
Any problems encountered?
Materialize.css was difficult to use at first and we particularly focused on the design of the website. From handpicking the colors to creating card layouts, we struggled with finding the best user-friendly design.
What have you learned?
We learned how to use the Google Maps API to find distance, time, and display maps. We also learned different algorithms and what actually contributes to carbon footprint. We learned how we burn calories and how to calculate gas prices based on a car's miles/gallon.
