Inspiration

The inspiration for this project was extremely simple. I enjoy playing around with sounds and frequencies. Physics demos like resonance with tuning forks or frequency beats were always my favorite growing up.

What it does

This project gathers audio from its surroundings. Whether that may be ambient sounds, specific frequencies, music or instruments, the system will capture the sound and pulse electromagnets based on the frequencies gathered.

How we built it

I built it by connecting a sound detection module (microphone breakout board) as the sole input, and three electromagnets as the output. The microcontroller is the middle man that does all the audio processing and communication between the modules.

Challenges we ran into

Challenges I ran into include:

  1. Initialing the communication for the microphone sensor.
  2. Properly filtering the sound.
  3. Splitting the audio into high, mid, and low frequencies using Fast Fourier Transform (FFT).
  4. Normalizing the audio.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

The biggest accomplishment is the frequency splitting. It was definitely the most challenging part of the project and can even be considered the soul of the project. It turns the project from a "System Hears Any Sound: Pulsing A Magnet" into a full fledged audio visualizer.

What's next for Wavrunnr

Only one thing is next for Wavrunnr, and that's to smile and have fun with it.
