Inspiration
Finding property in Ethiopia can be fragmented and time-consuming. Buyers may have to search across different channels, contact multiple sellers or agents, and spend significant effort trying to determine whether a listing and the person behind it can be trusted.
At the same time, property owners, landlords, and agents need a better way to present their properties and reach serious potential buyers.
We built WAVEMART PROPERTY MARKETPLACE to bring these experiences together in one platform.
Our inspiration was simple: make property discovery easier, more transparent, and more trustworthy for the Ethiopian market.
We wanted to build more than a website full of listings. We wanted to create a marketplace where discovery, verification, communication, and monetization could work together.
What it does
WaveMart connects people looking for property with property owners, landlords, and agents.
Users can discover properties and filter them by criteria such as location, price, and property type. They can view detailed property information, photos, save properties they're interested in, and communicate directly with sellers or agents.
The platform also includes features designed around trust and engagement, including listing moderation, identity verification (KYC), direct messaging, voice calling, notifications, and customer support.
WaveMart is designed specifically for the Ethiopian market and supports English, Amharic, and Tigrinya.
For sellers and agents, WaveMart provides premium capabilities and VIP/property visibility options. Our monetization model is designed around providing additional value to users who want greater visibility and marketplace capabilities.
For Shipaton, we are using RevenueCat to build and manage the subscription and premium monetization layer of the mobile experience.
The overall journey we are building is:
Discover → Evaluate → Verify → Connect → Transact
How we built it
We approached WaveMart as a marketplace rather than simply a property directory.
That meant building several interconnected experiences: property discovery, listing creation, listing management, moderation, verification, communication, notifications, payments, subscriptions, and support.
We designed the experience around the realities of the Ethiopian market, including local payment infrastructure and multilingual support.
We also built the product for both web and Android so that users can access the marketplace through the platform that is most convenient for them.
For monetization, we are integrating RevenueCat into the mobile experience so subscriptions and premium capabilities can be managed through a dedicated subscription infrastructure rather than building the entire billing system ourselves.
The result is a marketplace where the different pieces are connected instead of feeling like separate features.
Challenges we ran into
The biggest challenge was not building a single feature. It was making many different systems work together while keeping the experience simple.
A property marketplace has two sides: people searching for properties and people offering them. Both sides need value, and both sides need to trust the platform.
We had to think about how to:
Present large amounts of property information without overwhelming users
Build useful search and filtering experiences
Create trust around listings and users
Support identity verification and moderation
Make communication between buyers and sellers easy
Support multiple languages
Integrate local payment infrastructure
Design premium functionality without damaging the free discovery experience
Keep the mobile experience simple despite the complexity behind it
Another challenge was understanding that monetization cannot simply be added after the product is finished. It needs to be connected to a real user benefit.
That led us to focus premium functionality around things such as additional visibility and marketplace capabilities for sellers and agents.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We're proud that WaveMart has grown beyond an idea into a live property marketplace with a published Android application and web experience.
We built a product that brings together property discovery, detailed listings, moderation, verification, messaging, voice communication, notifications, multilingual support, payments, subscriptions, and premium property visibility.
We're particularly proud of building for the Ethiopian market instead of treating localization as an afterthought.
Supporting English, Amharic, and Tigrinya, incorporating local payment infrastructure, and designing around local property-market behavior are all important parts of the product.
We're also proud of reaching the point where monetization can become part of the product architecture. RevenueCat gives us a foundation for managing subscriptions and experimenting with premium experiences while keeping the marketplace itself focused on user value.
Most importantly, WaveMart is now something people can actually use—not just a prototype or concept.
What we learned
Our biggest lesson is that a marketplace is fundamentally a trust product.
Having many listings is not enough.
Users need confidence that listings are legitimate, that the people they are communicating with are real, and that the platform provides useful tools and support throughout the journey.
We also learned that localizing a product means much more than translating text.
Payment methods, communication habits, language, verification, and user expectations all matter.
Another important lesson was that monetization should follow value.
Instead of making users pay simply to access the core marketplace, we are exploring ways to charge for capabilities that create additional commercial value for sellers and agents, such as premium visibility and subscription features.
Finally, building WaveMart has taught us to think about the entire user journey rather than individual features.
A successful property marketplace needs to connect:
Discovery → Trust → Communication → Value → Transaction
What's next for WAVEMART PROPERTY MARKETPLACE
Our next goal is to make WaveMart a deeper and more trusted digital layer for the Ethiopian property market.
We want to continue improving listing quality, verification, search, communication, and the overall buyer and seller experience.
On the monetization side, we want to use RevenueCat to continue improving our subscription experience and learn which premium features create the most meaningful value for sellers and agents.
We also want to strengthen the marketplace network effect: better listings attract more buyers, more buyers create more value for sellers, and more successful interactions make the platform more useful for everyone.
Long term, our vision goes beyond simply helping someone find a property.
We want WaveMart to become a trusted platform for the broader property journey in Ethiopia—helping people discover opportunities, understand properties, connect with the right people, and move toward transactions with greater confidence.
WaveMart is building the digital property marketplace we believe Ethiopia needs.
