Inspiration

As busy students, we often find ourselves stressed and overwhelmed by seemingly never-ending deadlines and meetings. It feels impossible to streamline and keep track of information coming from all different directions: our inboxes, Slack workspaces, Canvas, Google Calendar, and more. From club meeting notifications to office hours, all while maintaining friendships and carving out the personal time that keeps us sane, the mental overhead of tracking everything across five different platforms that never talk to each other is its own kind of exhaustion. Things fall through the cracks. Events are missed. Assignments are either submitted late or scrambled at the last minute. Amidst the countless responsibilities, students need every opportunity to reduce the stress they already have. Thus, we created Wavelength, an all-in-one personal assistant designed to help students keep up with their busy lives, alleviating the anxiety from merely trying to find where each piece of information is located.

What It Does

Our phones are often our go-to place for information -- specifically, iMessage is one of our most-used apps, especially for quick communication. Thus, Wavelength extracts information related to time management (deadlines, class schedules, meetings, etc.) and sends personalized reminders and tips to the user via iMessage. There are no new apps to download; no new platforms to check. Users can text Wavelength just like they'd text a friend.

Wavelength can connect to everything: Canvas assignments, Google Calendar, Gmail, and Slack workspaces, and build a complete picture of your academic life in real time. You can ask it anything related to your academics. For example, "What's due this week?" "Do I have anything tomorrow morning?" or "Add my CS study group to my calendar for Friday at 7 pm." Beyond being your personalized assistant, Wavelength ensures you are on track for your assignments before you even know you need to be. Stressed about assignments? Wavelength can give you structured advice on how to plan your workday or week, navigating office hours, review sessions, deadlines, and assignment descriptions all in one, succinct reminder. Pass by a flyer about an event? Instead of snapping a pic and forgetting about it, send the picture to Wavelength, and it will automatically add the date and location of the event immediately to your calendar. Have a conflict? Wavelength seamlessly alerts you about potential conflicts, and guides you to ensure every event in your calendar is at the top of your priority.

Additionally, Wavelength keeps you part of the campus community. Connect your university Slack workspaces and choose which channels to monitor. Club meetings, campus events, free food, etc. Wavelength surfaces all of it, not just deadlines, giving you updates, asking you about preferences, and keeping you up-to-date with the plans you want.

Wavelength also includes several features like supporting scheduled reminders that make sure students stay on track with multiple platforms at a time. They can also send video messages that are automatically transcribed and make it easy to interact with their messages hands-free. For events and meetings, Wavelength generates direct location links through Google Maps and helps users quickly navigate across campus. Additionally, the system also does personality matching and recommendations to tailor itself to each user.

How We Built It

With the front-end, we built a React App that asks the user to connect their phone number, Google, Canvas, and Slack Accounts to our assistant. On the back-end, we used the Canvas, Google Cloud, and Slack APIs to scrape information from the user's accounts; then our Claude Agent writes personalized messages based on this data, which are sent to the user through Photon's iMessage API.

Challenges We Ran Into

The part of the project that posed the most problems for us was combining the frontend and backend -- specifically, allowing Slack and other platforms to integrate with our backend processes when a user tries to connect their account through the UI. While testing, we hosted our server on our local computers and used ngrok to bridge the gap between the frontend and backend, so we didn't need to deploy to the web.

Another issue we encountered was having to test many features blindly in the terminal. For instance, we had to write scripts to simulate the messages users would type into our application and run those test scripts through our terminal to anticipate appropriate responses. Running many of the tests through our terminal kept latency low, enabling quick responses so we could iterate on our code. After completing the features and successfully testing them through the terminal, integrating this interactive user interface with real messages that are replied to in real time through Photon posed a significant challenge. The messages initially sent had high latency because our application gathered data from many sources, such as various Slack channels, emails, calendars, and Canvas. To resolve this issue, we used a cache to retrieve relevant, recent messages from the various channels and store them, so we could retrieve them from the cache instead of rescraping the data. After a day, when the messages would potentially become irrelevant, we would clear the cache. This significantly reduced the latency of our Photon-integrated messaging platform.

Accomplishments that We're Proud of

The aspect of our project we are most proud of is building something we genuinely need ourselves. This is the first time any of us has built a fully customized AI agent from the ground up, and we built it for the most relatable user we know: the overwhelmed college student.

We're proud of building an agent that actually reasons -- wavelength doesn't just retrieve information; it decides what matters, when to reach out, and how urgent something is. It looks at your calendar, your assignments, your emails, and your Slack channels together and makes a judgment call, giving you the peace of mind to focus on your studies, career, and the people who matter most to you.

We're also proud of the proactive architecture. Most AI tools wait to be asked, but wavelength texts you first, as the whole point is that you shouldn't have to remember to check. When something is due in an hour, and you're across campus, it already knows, and it tells you exactly how long it'll take to get there.

Learning how to use new tools such as the Photon SDK, integrating various APIs for our data channels, designing an efficient scraping method that only retrieves the most relevant information from our data channels, integrating a seamless experience for the user to sync their Google account, Slack, and Canvas, overcoming latency, integration, and caching challenges, and learning how to test through terminal scripting are all feats we are so proud of accomplishing.

Building this in a weekend reminded us that the best technology solves a problem you feel every single day. We built Wavelength because we needed it, and we’re proud to return the power to students to control their schedules, academics, and campus involvement.

What We Learned

There are many things we have learned from working on this project. One of which is how to integrate so many different APIs and data sources, such as Slack, Google Mail, Google Calendar, and Canvas. We learned the importance of latency and how to use caches to reduce latency between our agents' messages. We also learned how to use the Photon SDK, and it was really interesting to see how our Macs can run as servers. We also learned how to design complex data-processing pipelines, from scraping source data from our various channels to processing it into coherent responses that are sent to the user.

In addition, we learned firsthand why latency kills user experience. Every message initially triggered live scrapes across all four data sources before Claude could even start generating a response. We solved this by building a context-caching layer that serves a warm snapshot instantly while refreshing in the background -- a pattern borrowed from systems engineering that made the agent feel immediate rather than sluggish.

We went deep on Claude's tool-use API, designing a multi-turn agentic loop in which the model decides mid-conversation whether to call external tools (like writing to Google Calendar), handle conflicts, request missing information from the user, and resume. Building a reliable tool use required carefully engineered prompts, conflict detection logic, and graceful fallbacks.

What's Next for Wavelength

As for our next steps, we look forward to making our project even more useful and tailored to busy, burnt-out college students. One feature we look forward to implementing is a RAG model that helps students monitor their academic performance. For instance, we can tailor a model that retrieves information from a student’s course syllabi, customized to each university’s students, academic resources, and professors' office hours. For instance, if a student has a lower grade for a certain class, the agent can send proactive reminders on upcoming assignments that have a high weight to the student’s grade, and remind and encourage them to start on the assignment earlier, or direct them to university resources that would assist them with the assignment. We envision Wavelength as every student’s go-to, omnipotent resource for all their needs, questions, and problems.
