Inspiration
Electricity bills tell us how much we paid, but not why we paid it. Most people don't know which appliances consume the most electricity, what caused their bill to increase, or how much they could actually save by changing their daily habits.
We wanted to turn this confusing information into something simple and actionable. This led us to build WattWise — Smart Energy Decision Engine, with the idea that understanding energy consumption should be as easy as checking your monthly spending.
Our goal was simple:
Don't just show people their electricity consumption — help them understand it and make better decisions.
What it does
WattWise analyzes household electricity usage and converts it into clear, actionable insights.
Users can:
- Add their household appliances and usage patterns.
- Estimate appliance-wise electricity consumption and cost.
- Identify their biggest energy-consuming appliances.
- Compare current and previous consumption.
- Analyze electricity bill information.
- Use the Energy Detective to discover where most of their energy is going.
- Use the What-If Simulator to see how changing appliance usage affects their bill.
- Set savings targets and explore ways to reach them.
- Receive personalized energy-saving recommendations.
- Track energy-saving habits and progress through lightweight gamification.
- View their overall Energy Score and consumption analytics.
The core experience follows:
Understand → Detect → Simulate → Act → Save
How we built it
We designed WattWise as a responsive web application with a focus on simplicity, visual storytelling and real-time interaction.
The application uses:
- React for the frontend
- Vite for development and build tooling
- JavaScript for application logic
- CSS / Tailwind CSS for responsive UI
- Chart.js / Recharts for energy visualizations
- LocalStorage for persisting user data
- OCR for extracting information from uploaded electricity bills
- AI integration for data-aware energy recommendations
The core calculation engine estimates appliance consumption using:
Energy (kWh) = Power (kW) × Hours/day × Days/month
The estimated consumption is then converted into an approximate electricity cost using the user's configured tariff.
We also built interactive simulations so that changing an appliance's usage immediately updates estimated consumption and potential savings.
Challenges we ran into
One of our biggest challenges was making the application useful rather than just another electricity calculator.
We had to think beyond displaying numbers and answer questions such as:
- How can we explain a complicated electricity bill to a normal user?
- How can we identify which appliance deserves the user's attention?
- How can we turn raw consumption data into actionable recommendations?
- How can we make potential savings understandable?
- How do we clearly distinguish estimated appliance consumption from actual meter readings?
- How can we make a data-heavy application simple and engaging?
We also had to balance an attractive, futuristic interface with accessibility and usability so that the application wouldn't become complicated for non-technical users.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are particularly proud of turning a simple electricity calculator concept into a complete energy decision-making experience.
🔎 Energy Detective
Instead of forcing users to interpret charts themselves, WattWise identifies their biggest estimated energy consumers and highlights where they should focus first.
🎯 What-If Simulator
Users can change appliance usage through interactive controls and immediately see the estimated impact on their monthly and yearly electricity costs.
💡 Actionable Recommendations
Rather than providing generic energy-saving tips, WattWise prioritizes recommendations based on the user's configured appliances and usage patterns.
📊 Visual Energy Story
We transformed numbers such as kWh and ₹ into visual insights that users can understand at a glance.
Most importantly, we built WattWise around one simple principle:
A useful energy app shouldn't just tell you what happened — it should help you decide what to do next.
What we learned
Through building WattWise, we learned that solving a real-world problem is not just about adding more technology.
We learned how important it is to:
- Start with the user's actual problem.
- Convert raw data into understandable information.
- Design around decisions rather than dashboards.
- Build calculations that are transparent and explainable.
- Clearly communicate when values are estimates.
- Make complex functionality accessible to non-technical users.
- Balance visual design with practical usability.
- Build an MVP that solves one problem well instead of trying to solve everything at once.
We also gained practical experience in frontend development, data visualization, interactive UI design, application state management and integrating intelligent features into a real-world product.
What's next for WattWise — Smart Energy Decision Engine
The current version primarily works with user-provided appliance and electricity data. Our next goal is to move from estimated consumption to real-world, real-time energy intelligence.
🔌 Smart Meter Integration
Connect WattWise with smart meters and smart plugs to collect real-time electricity consumption.
📡 Real-Time Energy Monitoring
Show live household energy usage and detect sudden consumption spikes.
🤖 Smarter Predictions
Use historical consumption patterns to forecast future electricity usage and identify unusual behavior.
🏠 Appliance-Level Monitoring
With compatible smart plugs and IoT devices, determine actual appliance-level energy consumption rather than relying only on estimates.
💰 Personalized Savings Plans
Automatically create realistic monthly energy-saving plans based on the user's budget and consumption patterns.
🌱 Environmental Impact
Translate saved electricity into estimated carbon-emission reductions to help users understand the broader environmental impact of their actions.
Our long-term vision is to make WattWise an intelligent energy companion that continuously learns from consumption patterns and helps households use less energy without compromising their everyday lifestyle.
WattWise — Your electricity bill tells you what you spent. WattWise tells you why. ⚡
