WattWise AI

Turn electricity data into smarter decisions.

Inspiration

An electricity bill tells us how much electricity we used, but it rarely tells us where that electricity went or what we could change.

As an electrical engineering student, I wanted to build something that connects basic electrical concepts with technology and sustainability. This led to WattWise AI: an energy assistant designed to help people understand their appliance-level electricity consumption and make smarter decisions.

What it does

WattWise AI allows users to enter their household appliances, power ratings, and approximate daily usage.

The application then:

  • Calculates estimated energy consumption.
  • Identifies the appliances contributing the most to consumption.
  • Visualizes the user's energy profile.
  • Uses AI to explain important consumption patterns.
  • Provides personalized energy-saving suggestions.
  • Allows users to test different usage scenarios through a What-If Simulator.

For example, a user can change their AC usage from 6 hours per day to 4 hours and immediately see how the estimated monthly energy consumption changes.

Instead of simply showing a number, WattWise tries to answer:

“What can I change?”

How it works

WattWise combines traditional electrical-energy calculations with AI-powered analysis.

Users provide appliance information such as:

Appliance → Power Rating → Hours Used → Number of Days

The application calculates estimated energy consumption and organizes the results into an easy-to-understand dashboard.

The AI layer then interprets the results and generates understandable recommendations based on the user's usage pattern.

The What-If Simulator allows users to modify appliance usage and compare the estimated results before and after the change.

This creates a simple cycle:

Input → Analyze → Simulate → Act

What makes it different

WattWise is not designed to be just another electricity calculator.

Its focus is on decision-making.

A normal calculator might tell a user:

“You consumed X kWh.”

WattWise goes further by asking:

“Which appliance matters most, what happens if you change its usage, and what action could make the biggest difference?”

The combination of appliance-level analysis, AI explanations, and interactive scenario simulation makes the experience more actionable.

Earth Forward Impact

The Earth Forward theme challenges participants to use technology to address environmental problems and specifically highlights areas such as renewable energy and conservation.

WattWise focuses on energy conservation by helping users understand their consumption and identify opportunities to reduce unnecessary electricity use.

The goal is not simply to display energy data, but to turn that data into understandable actions that can encourage more responsible energy habits.

Challenges

As a solo beginner, one of the biggest challenges was bringing together electrical calculations, web development, data visualization, and AI into one working application.

Another challenge was deciding where AI actually adds value. Instead of using AI for basic mathematical calculations, WattWise uses it primarily to interpret consumption patterns and communicate useful insights to the user.

What I learned

Building WattWise helped me explore areas outside my existing electrical engineering coursework, including:

  • Web application development
  • JavaScript and interactive interfaces
  • AI API integration
  • Data visualization
  • Git and GitHub
  • User-focused product design
  • Connecting engineering concepts with software

The project also taught me that a good hackathon project does not need to solve every part of a huge problem. It needs to solve one meaningful problem clearly and demonstrate the solution effectively.

What's next

WattWise currently focuses on user-provided appliance data.

Future versions could connect to smart plugs, IoT energy meters, or smart-home systems to collect real-time electricity data automatically.

This could eventually allow WattWise to move from:

“Tell me your energy usage.”

to:

“I can monitor your energy usage and help you improve it.”
