Inspiration

We wanted to make it easier for patients to get in touch with their doctors and navigate medical systems. This website brings many needed features in one place, and is based on Material 3 guidelines, which are engineered from the ground up to be easy to navigate.

What it does

The website is a patient dashboard, allowing patients to easy schedule appointments, view upcoming appointments, contact their doctors, and view the members of their care team - all while still looking good, thanks to the Material 3 theme.

How we built it

The frontend/UI runs on a Jekyll server (so it can run on GitHub Pages). It's written in HTML, SCSS, JS, and Liquid. The backend is written entirely in Rust, and runs on a Rocket web server that needs to be run separately. The front end has a config setting for the backend's IP address, so it's still easy to run them both, and for both to connect.

Challenges we ran into

We ran into challenges connecting the frontend to the API. Fortunately, Rocket and Serde make it easy to convert between JSON and Rust types. The real challenge was getting JavaScript to make the correct requests.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Our website features a complete e-mail system, where users can receive emails and also send emails to their doctors. It also offers a seamless transition from the backend database to what the user sees.

What we learned

We learned about full-stack development, from the backend to the UI the user sees. We also learned more about what's important in hospitals, from the patient's perspective, by thinking about what we wanted ourselves in the dashboard.

What's next for Watts Hospital Dashboard

We unfortunately don't have a way for users to sign in. The front end and back end support multiple users, but currently, the user has to manually edit things in their browser to switch profiles. We were simply not sure what the most secure method to have a sign in would be, as we're storing sensitive patient information. We hope to add this after UniHacks ends.
