Problem that you are trying to solve and its significance

Singapore launched the Bring Your Own Bottle(BYOB) movement back in 2017, encouraging the public to bring their own bottles instead of using disposable ones that can be harmful for the environment if not disposed correctly. Our solution, WaterWhereAh?, goes in tandem with this movement by providing locations of water coolers around Singapore for them to fill their bottles.

Inspiration for solution

  • Sometimes we'd have our water bottles but we couldn't find any water coolers. We built this app to solve an issue that we were facing.

How the solution is special / novel / unique

Our solution is special because it not only shows the locations of water coolers in Singapore, it also allows users to upload locations of water coolers that are not shown on the map, thus keeping the data updated. We've used an AI model trained to detect water coolers in images to verify that the image being sent over is indeed a water cooler.

How the product is meant to be used

Without the need of accounts and quick and easy access to the information, our app is meant to be used to anyone who wishes to quickly find out where the nearest water cooler is without hassle. Fast and easy. In and out.

The technologies or techniques used

  • TensorFlow, Flutter, FireStore, React

Key challenges

  • Time constraints

    • Due to the limited time, we had to cut down some features of our application.
  • Model not working

    • In the beginning, we had trouble getting the model to detect water coolers only. We figured out that it was using the silver and reflective nature of water coolers, thus taking anything that was either silver, reflecting or both.

The product as a business and/or at scale

  • We'd ideally like to have a mediocre size user base so that they can upload and keep the water cooler data in the map updated.

  • Our application isn't really viable as a business because we've made it more as a public service application.
